Reflexive Verbs The one who performs the action receives the action
Porejemplo When you comb your hair, you are the one combing, and you are the one getting combed Compare that with When you brush a dog, you are the one brushing, but your dog is the one getting brushed
Otroejemplo When you wash your face, you are the one washing, and you are the one getting washed Compare that with When you wash your car, you are the one washing, but your car is the thing getting washed
See the difference? Me lavo la cara (I wash my face) Lavo mi carro (I wash my car)
See the difference? Me peino en la noche (I comb my hair at night ) Ella peina a suhermana (She combs her sister’s hair)
You’ll know a verb is reflexive Because the verb will have “se” at the end Lavarse Acostarse Bañarse
In English This is like adding “oneself” after the verb To wash oneself To comb oneself To dress oneself
Which of these are reflexive? To talk To bathe To look at in the mirror To watch TV To lie down To read To think ?????
Common reflexive verbs to know… SO WRITE THESE DOWN!!! Lavarse - to wash (oneself) Bañarse – to bathe (oneself) Levantarse – to get (oneself) up Mirarse – to look at (oneself) Afeitarse – to shave (oneself) Cepillarse – to brush one’s teeth Acostarse – to lie (oneself) down Dormirse – to put (oneself) to sleep Vestirse – to dress (oneself)
To conjugate reflexive verbs Lavar se Drop the “se” from the end and move it out in front
The “se” has its own conjugation SE me nos te X se se
The rest of the verb is usually conjugated as a normal verb Lavar se lavolavamos lavas X lava lavan
Once you have the two conjugations Just match up the forms that go together se lavar me nos lavo lavamos te X lavas X I wash (myself) se se lava lavan
SO the steps are: 1. Drop the “se” and move it out in front 2. Conjugate the “se” 3. Conjugate the primary verb 4. Match up the corresponding forms
Try it on your paper Conjugate we comb our hair (peinarse)
Step 4: Match up the corresponding forms Step 3: Conjugate the primary verb Step 2: Conjugate the “se” Step 1:Drop the “se” and move it out in front peinar We comb (our hair) se me nos peino peinamos te X peinas X peina se se peinan
