  4. National Ave. Approximately 10 scale points is equivalent to a grade level of learning

  5. NY TIMES April 29, 2009Persistent Racial Gap Seen in Students Test Scores By SAM DILLONThe achievement gap between white and minority students has not narrowed in recent years, despite the focus of the No Child Left Behind law on improving black and Hispanic scores, according to results of a federal test considered to be the nation’s best measure of long-term trends in math and reading proficiency.

  7. Approximately 10 scale points is equivalent to a grade level of learning

  8. California has aligned state standards to textbooks, state tests and state sponsored p.d. More students are taking algebra earlier. How successful is the California experiment?

  9. National Perspective California 49th In 2009 NAEP, CA Ranked 44th out of 49 participating. CA was 42nd in 2005. NAEP 2009 8th grade

  10. Source: U.S. Department of Education National Achievement of Education Progress (NAEP 2009) The Nation’s Report Card California ranks at the bottom of country, only Mississippi ranks lower in 8th grade mathematics. On the CST more than half the students test at or above grade level, while on NAEP only 1/3 meet that goal. Approximately 10 scale points is equivalent to a grade level of learning

  11. The Achievement Gaps Continues… Data from star.cde.ca.gov Students from traditionally underserved demographic population continue to under-achieve over the past 7 years.

  12. Algebra for All or Algebra Forever “We have made significant gains in enrolling students in Algebra I in eighth grade in recent years, surpassing other state in the U.S. But we must set our goal higher.” Arnold Schwarzenegger July 8, 2008 We have also made more significant gains in FAILING students in Algebra I in eighth grade in recent years, surpassing other state in the U.S.

  14. General Math is Not the Answer 45% of Eighth Graders took the General Math Exam Only 23% of those students met standards Tracking is not a Solution

  15. What Happens in High School?

  16. 7th Grade Pre-algebra 8th Grade Algebra 1 9th Grade Algebra 1A 10th Grade Algebra 1B 11th Grade Algebra w/ CAHSEE Prep Unfortunately an all too typical pathway through secondary education It is not Algebra for ALL its is Algebra FOREVER

  17. Findings from Data • Understanding and being successful in mathematics up through 6th grade is the most powerful predictor of success in algebra/college prep math. • A large percentage of districts are not thoughtful about how students are assigned courses and classes. • Tracking is detrimental to students. • Failing Algebra 1/College Prep Math is detrimental to students. • Multiple years of Algebra 1(two year algebra) is detrimental to students. • Early access and success in Algebra 1/College Prep Math is most beneficial to students future in math.
