  2. Hirohito • emperor of Japan during WWII • promised to preserve world peace and benefit the welfare of the human race •  government created a cult around him to please ultranaionalists  

  3. World War 1 Growth • Japanese economy grew alot. • Japan gained industrial power after the production of heavy industrial production grew. • Japan took over former German possessions after war.

  4. Democracy • In the 1920's Japan started moving towards more widespread democracy. • Political  were growing stronger. • In 1925 all adult men, no matter which class won the right to vote. • Women did not win the right to vote until 1945.

  5. Western Interference • Younger gernerations were in revolt against Japanese tradition. • They adopted western fads and fashions. • In the 1920's there became a strong tension between the military and the government. • the military officers and conservatives blasted government corruption.

  6. The Appeal of Marxism • Marxism in Japan in the 1920s is basically the same as communism. • Marxism appealed to the Japanese people because they liked the idea of everyone being equal. • They also liked the idea that money would be distributed.

  7. Zaibatsu • powerful business leaders in Japan • gave donations to political parties • promoted international trade and things that would benefit them

  8.                 Tokyo Earthquake *Deaths were estimated at nearly 100,000, with an additional 40,000 missing.Thousands were left homeless. *This natural disaster, Earthquake of 1923, had a magnitude of 7.9 to 8.4 on the Richter scale. *A tsunami was generated and waves up to 30 feet hit the shores. Over 150 people died as a result of the tsunami.

  9. Ultranationalism • The japanese believed in their country 100%. • They didnt want to be anyone but japan. • Didn't believe in anything that other people did.

  10. Manchuria Incident •  Japan wanted Chinese province, Manchuria • Japanese army officers blew up their own tracks in China • blamed the explosion on China • attacked China in "self defense" and took over Manchuria • made a state there  put a Chinese emperor in charge

  11.                 Tradition Values *When new traditions broke out from the wars the Japan people wanted the old traditions back. *One of the old tradtions they wanted was keeping the samurai meaning "those who serve."

Chinese expansion • Japan started to take advantage of China's civil war in the 1930s to increase it's influence in China. • while Japan and China were in Combat with eachother in 1939 World War II broke out in Europe and quicky spread to Asia. • In 1936 Japan became allies with Germany and Italy. • They signed the Tripartite Pact in september 1940 which made the alliance official and became know as the Axis Powers.
