Priority 1: Promoting Innovation and Research and Development This Priority aims to improve the region's capacity to translate innovation into commercial outcomes that result in a step change in business productivity and performance. A particular focus is on the region's high class science base, notably its universities and research institutions.
Priority 1 2012 Open Call Timescales • Call Opens: Wednesday 6th June 2012 • Call Closes: Friday 21st September 2012 • Appraisal-ready Full Applications in by end of February 2013 • No grant funding approved after December 2013 • All monies defrayed by projects by 30th June 2015 • All outputs captured ideally by 30th June 2015, although ultimate deadline for reporting them is 31st December 2015 N.B. All dates above subject to confirmation by the LMC during week ending 8th June 2012
Priority 1 Themes • Raise levels of business investment in research, development and innovation. • Increase levels of knowledge transfer between these institutions and businesses. • Improve opportunities for skilled people, students and graduates to contribute to increased economic activity via innovation. • Improve levels of commercialisation of ideas for new business ventures with the establishment of demonstrator projects.
A Few Important Figures • £13.5M available for this Priority 1 Call round • £250k- Minimum ERDF that should be sought • £500K minimum project value, i.e. at least £250k match funding • 20%- maximum percentage for management and administration costs, as a proportion of total project costs.
Project Emphases • Applications that commit to delivering support to SMEsand business creation. • Emphasis remains on output delivery rather than outcomes and impacts, particularly jobs created, jobs safeguarded, business created and business assists to SMEs.
Key Characteristics of Project to be Supported (1) • Although outputs are a major priority, projects should address long-term foci and objectives. • Critical mass of public or private R&D expertise and/or facilities, maximising benefits of existing investments. • Co-operation with structures supporting businesses to innovate, e.g., Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) • Innovation in services as well as product manufacturing.
Key Characteristics of Project to be Supported (2) • New ways of using and adapting existing technologies. • Stimulating increased and improved investment in research, development and innovation through cross-sector collaboration. • Enabling access to knowledge generated by research to increase exploitation and innovation in the region. • Role of rural and remote areas in innovation.
And finally... Priority will be given to approaches which enable strong business demand-led processes to be implemented and therefore encourage commitment and investment from the business or organisation themselves. Projects that build on successful pilots or broaden out existing activity will be encouraged in order to learn from experience and make the best use of resources.’ Regional Competitiveness and Employment Objective 2007-2013- WMERDF Operational Programme
