A passion for learning, a commitment to teaching students, helping them connect to the real world, their world A Technology Odyssey. by Jude Kesl Thanks to Cindy Lane for the first two background images.
Where did it all start? When you would start a download and then walk away to come back later to see if the download was complete? Remember 600 baud modems? Gopher? Telnet? That is where I started my odyssey with the internet and technology. Why? Data for helping to connect my urban inner city students with the larger world. Engaging them with the world.
No one knew exactly how to proceed, there were no roadmaps for integrating technology yet. We worked on trial and error sharing as we went along. From Telnet and Gopher to Netscape!!! From just collecting data on earthquakes and weather To assisting local college instructors. How do you use this new fangled stuff with students? How do you get teachers up to speed? Remember teaching colleagues how to access email for the first time?
What was next? I heard a speaker, Eliot Soloway, speak about the possibilities of hand held computers. That lead to a Palm Innovation Grant and an Intel Odyssey story Elliot beaming~! I had to have one! I bought a HandSpring Visor on my way home. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51TEZZT9YQL._SL500_AA280_.jpg
On my own path Over the next few years I learned to use all kinds of cool tools that I shared with teachers and students …. Palm IIICs, Vernier Handheld probes, various Microsoft applications, Inspiration, and more. ….but where was I going?
Intel Teach provided the …the road map, a format, and the research to back it up!
Now used to influence… Two local universities have hired me to assist their student teachers and in-service their preservice teachers Over 6000 teachers in my district, due to changes in the curriculum guide format and the inclusion of projects
Student centered Lessons that infuse 21st Century skills, more global are Project based meeting the needs of all students not being the sage but learning WITH the students http://api.ning.com/files/kNiPnyJfgKQ7jeX0oxD*CrEAAloRlGO3ugl-kPtBCVBXaD-0xmizkNcgVxMTmWzWQzkDWpBSDv4QokvoHtAxwVnqFKwebpx8/Leader1.jpg
What is next on the path? Hope to incorporate Intel Teach into the universities for credit. Influence the university instructors to begin using more Web 2.0 tools in innovative and creative ways Become more skilled and able to share more Intel resources with teachers
