10/15/1336th Day of School Learning goal (7.E.1.5): I will be able to explain the influence of global winds and the jet stream on weather conditions. Due Today: Flashcards, Sandy vs. Joplin chart, Tornado vs. Hurricane Poster & Most Destructive Storm Paragraph Evening Assignment: Wind Foldable, Winter storm flashcards, and any missing work
Assignment to complete today: Web Quest and Foldable Wind and Weather http://www.heathersanimations.com/weather/cloud96.gif
Wind and Weather • The atmosphere has wind patterns. • Uneven heating causes air to move through pressure differences (high -> low pressure) • Earth’s rotation affects wind direction. • There are three belts of global wind: trade winds, the westerlies, and the easterlies. • Jet streams flow near the top of the troposphere. McDougall p. A48 Introduction

This web quest introduces several types of wind or wind factors that influence our weather: • Coriolis effect • Trade winds • Westerlies • Jet Stream Learning goal (7.E.1.5): I will be able to explain the influence of global winds and the jet stream on weather conditions. Purpose of Web Quest
Create a 4-flap foldable to be used to describe the winds or wind factors that affect our weather. • Your foldable should include the title, Wind and Weather, along with your name, date and core. Put this on the back of the foldable. • The 4 flaps should be labeled on the outside of the flap with each of the winds or factors: • Coriolis effect • trade winds • westerlies, • jet stream • Include the following information for each one on the inside flap: • Description of wind or wind factor • Direction of air movement • How wind affects weather 4) Due Wednesday October 16th. Tasks
McDougall Textbook Ch. 2, section 2 (pages A47-52) ESD02BAD.PDF • http://www.weatherwizkids.com/weather-wind.htm • http://www.brainpop.com/science/weather/wind/ • http://www.classzone.com/books/earth_science/terc/content/visualizations/es1904/es1904page01.cfm • http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/earth/inside-the-jet-stream.html Resources
Investigate Coriolis Effect • Read the investigation on page A49. • Write the “What Do You Think? And the “Challenge” questions in your notebook. • You will need one partner. • Investigation materials are near the bulletin board. • Be sure you have read the procedure before you come to the table!
