  2. K-State STEM students abroad

  3. Funding for Study Abroad

  4. Idea: Funding not necessarily a barrier K-State Examples • Exchanges pay same tuition • Winds up being similar to the cost of a semester on campus • Some direct enroll cost less • Institutional scholarships • May not pay for the entire programs, but can help alleviate costs • Most K-State scholarships transfer • Out of state students pay in state tuition rates on exchanges • CESP direct enroll program costs less than $4,000 for a semester • Scholarships: • Goss Scholarship ($5,000) • Global Education Initiative Scholarship ($200-$1000) • Some exchanges have scholarships associated with them

  5. Idea: Value K-State Examples • Advertising as being a valuable experience even if they have to pay • Good to get a different perspective their academic filed • Different cultural perspectives • Programs to prestigious schools • Work closely with faculty • Study abroad advising and promotion • New exchanges to Group of Eight schools in Australia

  6. Idea: High Achieving Students • Could it be that high achieving students have lot of options and therefore can be more picky about choosing programs? • Meaning that those students could choose the program that costs nothing over a program with some cost.

  7. Faculty and Study Abroad

  8. Idea: Contact Person K-State Examples • Designated 1 person in each department or college to be in charge of academic approval forms and to be in charge of study abroad (instead of having everyone doing it) • Make being in charge of international education part of the job description (could make it count towards tenure) • CAPD, Business, Agriculture, Engineering • Not currently part of tenure or part of most job descriptions

  9. Idea: Faculty Led Programs K-State Examples • Set up faculty led program that faculty take turns leading • Set up takes the most time; once the program is up and going, it’s fairly easy to run and maintain • Reoccurring language faculty led summer program

  10. Additional Ideas K-State Examples • Identify best current partners, top universities in your field • Faculty highly influential on students • Having clear goals that are supported by the faculty • CAPD does this • SAO starting to do that with new advisor position • 2025 Master plan

  11. Example of why faculty involvement is crucial & powerful • Exchange program to Heriot-Watt University • In top destination country & English speaking • Exchange had died out then was renewed in 2010 • Chemistry only exchange • Students can take upper level chemistry classes and do research • Chemistry faculty have been there before • SAO created presentations, emailings, fliers, and offered to do presentations to chemistry classes • Have not sent any students yet • Why? • Could do online class collabs, visiting faculty, do faculty led program there to generate interest
