  3. Steps in the Policy Review Process • Specific policies or Policy Advisories reviewed by individual Cabinet members and by Cabinet • Policies and recommendations presented to IBB and impacted group—feedback requested

  4. Recommendations for Governing Board—ASBA Policy Advisories A. Accept ASBA policy advisories as submitted Example: JHD: Exclusions and Exemptions from School Attendance (Chronic Health Conditions) Policy, Regulation and Exhibit

Recommendations for Governing Board (continued) • A-1: Accept ASBA policy advisory and add recommendation when option is warranted Example: JKE Expulsion of Students • The Governing Board (Option A: will decide in executive session whether the Board will conduct an expulsion hearing or designate one or more hearing officers to hear the evidence) OR (Option B: directs all expulsions hearings to be conducted by a hearing officer selected from a list of hearing officers approved by the Board)

Modify ASBA policy advisory Example: JK: Student Discipline • The principal of each District school shall ensure that a copy (hard copy or electronic copy) of all rules pertaining to discipline, suspension and expulsion are distributed to each student’s parents at the time the student enrolls in school each year.

Recommendation to Not Accept ASBA Policy Advisory Example: JICI Weapons in Schools • . . .the superintendent shall prescribe regulations for the student’s participation in a course of training in bows or firearms approved by the Governing Board. . .

  8. Policies for additional discussion • Proposed revisions/recommendations made by Cabinet member under whose division the policy falls • Seek legal counsel where necessary • Discussion of revisions at Cabinet meeting, IBB and impacted group • Submission to Governing Board for reading and subsequent action • Submission to ASBA for formatting and inclusion in District Policy Manual

  9. Timeline • Completion of all ASBA proposed policy advisories by May 2011 • Continue same process with all new ASBA policy advisories • When no ASBA policy advisory, continue to review and revise current policies as necessary—follow delineated process
