Fisheries independent biological survey data David Richardson Oceanography Branch Northeast Fisheries Science Center Narragansett, RI
Northeast Fisheries Science Center Trawl Survey • 20 m depth to shelf edge • Fall: 1963-present • Spring: 1968-present • Continuous sampling of: surface temperature, salinity, pCO2, water column currents (ADCP), fisheries acoustics along survey track http://www.nefsc.noaa.gov/esb/ NEFSC Ecosystem survey branch
Station sampling (1) • Bottom trawl at ≈350 stations each cruise • Catch sorted to species • Each individual measured
Station sampling (2) • Age samples taken for commercially important species • Stomach contents analyzed for most species • Sex and Maturity • Various special request samples Otolith from a 5-year old haddock http://www.nefsc.noaa.gov/femad/pbb/ NEFSC population biology branch
NEFSC Plankton Surveys CTD • 6 times per year since 1971 • CTD cast to within 5 m of sea floor • Temperature, Salinity, Oxygen • Plankton tow with bongo net • First net processed for zooplankton • Second net processed for fish larvae • Dissolved Inorganic Carbon, Total Alkalinity, Nutrients at a subset of stations http://www.nefsc.noaa.gov/epd/ocean/MainPage/ NEFSC Oceanography
Additional NEFSC Surveys • Scallop survey • Shrimp Survey • Herring Acoustic survey • Clam survey • Winter trawl survey (ended 2007)
