Evaluate Reasoning Review. You need to have your binder open to “Evaluate Reasoning,” Have a blank piece of notebook paper on your desk, ready to take notes. Label your paper “Evaluate Reasoning Review.”
What it is: What it is not: A deep inference (reading between the lines) Uncovering the REASONS behind actions AND JUDGING them Never directly stated in text, but may need EVIDENCE to prove your evaluation. Key Words: • Wrong/Right Reasoning? • Most important conclusion… • Reasonable conclusion… • Does ____seem fair/unfair? A simple answer stated in the text Directly told to you by the character Detail, fact, event As simple as figuring out causes or effects It is not only an inference. Evaluating Reasoning(what your notes say) Examples: Non Examples: Ponyboy must deeply care for Johnny since he ran away with him. Ponyboy should not think that Darry does not love him just because they got into an argument. Darry should realize by now that his actions hurt Ponyboy. The greasers need to learn that everyone has problems. Ponyboy feels like he must run away after Darry hits him. Johnny killed someone and will have consequences for this. Cherry supports the greasers. Dally got extremely upset when Johnny died. Bob was a Soc.
What is Evaluate Reasoning? It is: • A deep inference (reading between the lines) • Uncovering the REASONS behind the actions AND JUDGING them • NEVER directly stated in the text, but need EVIDENCE to prove your evaluation. • Key words: • Wrong/Right reasoning • Most important conclusion… • Reasonable conclusion… • Does __________ seem fair/unfair?
Evaluate Reasoning is NOT: • A simple answer stated in the text. • Directly told to you by the character • Detail, fact, event • As simple as figuring out causes or effects. • It is not only an inference.
Think about the following information: What statement is the most important conclusion the reader can draw from this information (column to the left)? a. Penelope must really love Ulysses to stay faithful for 10 years b. Ulysses must be a handsome man to have some so many love him c. Ulysses must love his wife a lot to fight this much to get home d. Ulysses must be a strong warrior to have lasted on his journey this long • Ulysses has been away for 10 years • Ulysses has killed many men • Ulysses fell in love with Circe • Ulysses fell in love with Calypso • Ulysses might never get home
Answering Evaluate Reasoning • If it is a short answer style question, always answer • C: Inference “I infer…” “Yes/No, because…” • E: text evidence • E: text evidence • R: explain your reasoning
Evaluating Reasoning Statements: Label each as either an example or non-example of a statement that shows you have evaluated reasoning. • Use E for example • Use NE for non-example • Explain why something is or isn’t evaluate reasoning.
