  3. Maximising Impact Through Youth Sport Trust Membership Improving the quality of PE teaching ‘The first principle is ensuring that all children get good-quality teaching in PE. If we don’t use the funding to achieve this, then we have missed out on a huge opportunity. But we can only do this if we train teachers and teaching assistants well.’ Headteacher, Archibald First School Headteachers in the 22 schools visited considered developing the skills and expertise in PE of their staff as the most sustainable way of using the PE and sport premium. The schools identified two key factors to ensure effective development activities for staff: the quality of the specialists used to deliver the training the opportunity for staff to do more than just observe these specialists teaching pupils.

Maximising Impact through Youth Sport Trust Membership Membership entitles schools to access the following Professional learning courses; • KS 1 • KS 1-2 Bridging course (February 2015 launch) • KS 2 • Inclusive PE • Primary PE Subject Coordinators – 6 modules • Primary Raising Achievement through PE (Feb 2015)

KS1-2 Bridging Course • KEY PRINCIPLES: • To give teachers the confidence and competence to effectively teach PE in KS2, making the bridge between PL at KS1 into more recognised activities. • FIT TO YST PRINCIPLES: • Readiness to learn • Improved behaviour for learning • Improved self esteem • Making progress and achievement their potential • Willingness to take a risk • Commitment to learn and achieve

KS1/2 Bridging Course • Group Task: Bulls Eye • Movement outcomes: • Develop the skills of aiming; • Apply some self-knowledge of stability; • Begin to develop skills with non-dominant hand/foot • What to do: • Aim at the targets around the room • Challenge yourself by using a range of equipment • Touch the target = 1 point • Score a ‘goal’ = 3 points

Maximising Impact Through Youth Sport Trust Membership • Making progress and achieving their potential: • To give teachers the confidence and competence to effectively teach PE in across Foundation Stage, KS1 and KS 2 • To move away from teaching sport to young children, to teaching children key movement skills e.g. throwing, jumping, catching. This will give children a movement foundation to allow them to access more recognised activities/sports at KS2. • Ensuring that teachers are up skilled in the PE curriculum so that the Sport Premium funding leaves a sustainable impact. • Reviewing and developing your PE curriculum provision (what you teach in PE) to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum at both KS1 and 2 . • Ensuring that teachers are upskilled in the PE curriculum to be able to differentiate through STEP to ensure all pupils make progress and are adequately challenged.
