  2. Your Mental and Emotional Health Someone who is mentally and emotionally healthy can: • Usually handle a wide variety of feelings and situations. • Make wise choices that demonstrate both strong values and responsible behavior.

  3. In this lesson, you’ll learn to: Lesson Objectives Identify the characteristics of good mental and emotional health. Explain the importance of meeting needs in healthful ways. Analyze the importance and benefits of abstinence as it relates to emotional health. Analyze the relationship between mental health promotion and disease prevention.

  4. Good Mental/Emotional Health Attributes The Characteristics of Good Mental/Emotional Health People with good mental/emotional health demonstrate the following characteristics: • Positive self-esteem • Sense of belonging • Sense of purpose • Positive outlook • Autonomy

  5. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs A Pyramid of Needs Abraham Maslow organized human needs in the form of a pyramid called the hierarchy of needs.

  6. Physical Needs A Pyramid of Needs Survival needs such as food, water, sleep, and shelter rest at the bottom of the pyramid. • There are many people for whom food, clean water, and shelter are not easily obtained. • Social issues like homelessness can be related to health and physical needs.

  7. Need for Safety A Pyramid of Needs Safety needs are not just about safeguarding yourself against physical harm, they can also be psychological in nature. • Psychological needs for safety • include: • Safety of familiar places • Safety of familiar people

A Pyramid of Needs Need to Be Loved and to Belong We need to interact with other people and to know that we are valued members of a group that enhances our physical, mental, and social health. • Feeling a sense of belonging can: • Increase your confidence. • Strengthen your mental/ • emotional health.

  9. One way you might meet this need is by participating in productive activities. By being able to do something well, you gain respect and a feeling of self-worth. A Pyramid of Needs Need to Be Valued and Recognized People need to be appreciated and to be personally valued by family, friends, and peers.

  10. It involves: Having goals that motivate and inspire you. Having the courage to make changes in your life in order to meet your goals and grow as a person. A Pyramid of Needs Need to Reach Your Potential Self-actualization is a lifelong process, and part of the process is learning the self-discipline you need to reach your goals.

Meeting Your Needs How Should You Meet Your Needs? • The ways you choose to meet your needs affect your mental/emotional health. • Sometimes people choose risky ways to fulfill their needs—for example, by engaging in sexual activity or by joining a gang. • Practicing abstinence and finding healthful ways to meet emotional needs are strategies to avoid these risk behaviors.

  12. Influences on Your Personality Understanding Your Personality • Your personality: • Is an important factor in how you choose to meet your needs. • Includes your emotional makeup, attitudes, thoughts, and behaviors. • Is influenced by heredity and environment.
