  3. Map of Assyria • Capital was Nineveh • Network of roads linking the provinces • 650 B.C. empire stretched from Persian Gulf through Egypt and into Asia Minor

  4. Religion • Ashurism -1st religion of Assyrians -Practiced until 256 A.D. -Comes from the Latin word Ashur • Christianity -1st nation to accept this -1st church was founded in 33 A.D. by Thomas, Bortholomew, & Thaddeus

  5. Government • Centralized despotic monarchy with imperial ambitions -practiced all through Assayrian history • Empire divided into provinces -each province led by a single governor who then reported to the king • Monarchy

  6. Government (cont.) • Very brutal kings • Most powerful government of all • Royal mail service • Charged taxes on citizens to help fund buildings in Nineveh

  7. Army • Composed of foot solders, charioteers, and calvery • Most lethal fighting force in the Middle East • Iron weapons and battering rams

Army (cont.) • Conquered people were treated cruelly • Burned cities and killed or tortured thousands of people • Migrated its citizens • Heavy taxes were charged to citizens to supply the army • To quote from the book, “…whose arrows were sharp and all their bows bent, the horses’ hooves were like flint, and their [chariot] wheels like a whirlwind.”

  10. Major Leaders • Shamishi-(1813 B.C.-1781B.C.) Adad tried to create an empire but failed when he was conquered by Babylonians • Tukulti-Ninurta (1233 B.C.- 1197 B.C.) conquered Babylonia • Tiglat- Pileser (1116 B.C – 1090 B.C.) extended empire into Syria

  11. Events • From the start in Nineveh in circa 5000 B.C. to the defeat of Ashur-Uballit at Harran, the Assyrian empire was effective in history. • The fall of the Assyrians came when the Babylonians allied with the people of Medes against the growing empire of Assyria.

  12. Recommendation We believe it would be to our best interest for the following reasons: • The army is greater than ours • The civilization will not fall until the year of 609 B.C. as predicted by the elders • Their land is greater • The weapons of iron that they own over power our weapons
