  2. SUSTAINABILITY: Meeting current social and economic needs without compromising environmental resources for future generations. Recycling is a visible part of being sustainable. Participation is recycling is a building block for promoting sustainable development on campus.

  3. Do you recycle already? How many of you recycle at work or at home? Rules Change: • Every place has slightly different rules and restrictions for recycling. • As recycling technology evolves, the system for recycling also changes. I want to clarify current rules for recycling at SLU.

  4. Recycle to save money. • Removing trash from campus costs 33% more than removing recycling.* • Therefore, throwing recyclables into the trash is like tossing money into a landfill. • The more we maximize our recycling potential, the more money we can save and divert from landfills to other money and resource-saving sustainability initiatives on campus. Since SLU has introduced single-stream recycling, waste collection costs have been slashed by 18%, saving tens of thousands of dollars annually. $$$ $$ Recycling removal costs less. *33% is an approximation

  5. SLU is a Single-Stream Campus. That means everyday recyclables go together in the same container.

  6. Help out SLU, toss it in the BLUE. Where does Single-Stream go? Look for BLUE containers. They come in all different shapes and sizes, but the color is consistent.

  7. Single-Stream Recycling Look at what’s in front of you now. Can you recycle that? • SLU’s goal is to double it’s 2012 recycling rate to 30%. • This should be easy to achieve since… • Most of what you throw away can be recycled. • Soda Cans? • Water Bottles? • Plastic cups? • Handouts? • Coffee Cups + Warmers? • Napkins?

  9. Single-Stream Recycling What is recyclable on your table right now? • Coffee Cups and Warmers? • Napkins? • (if unused or hardly used)

  10. Single-Stream Recycling Look at what’s in front of you now. Can you recycle that? • Soda Cans? • YES!

  11. Single-Stream Recycling What is recyclable on your table right now? Look for the stamp. SLU collects all 1-7 (no styrofoam) • Water Bottles? • Plastic cups? • Plastic plates? • Utensils?

  12. Single-Stream Recycling Recycle these today! Keep your brochure/flyer as a reference recycling.slu.edu has more info • Soda cans • Water bottles • Plastic cups • Handouts • Paper coffee cups and cardboard warmers • Unused napkins

  13. Recyclables don’t have to be perfect to get recycled.

Steps in the Single-Stream Recycling Process 1 Collect recycling in blue bins. 2 Contents from blue bins goes into dumpsters with yellow lids. 3 Waste Management empties dumpsters and delivers recycling to RockTenn Recycling Centers. Local Recycling Center Locations 4 RockTenn recycles SLU’s paper, metal, plastic and glass. 03/2013

E-Waste • We also collect E-waste but separately from Single-Stream • E-waste is “anything with a cord” • Appliances • Electronics • Speak to your department about this and/or go to famisweb.slu.eduto request an e-waste pick-up. Also use famis for single-stream requests if you have large collections such as shelves of folders, journals, magazines, etc.
