  4. Context • 52,000 people living with sight loss in NI • 17 services • £3 Million spend in NI • 7 bases (Belfast x 2, Coleraine, Omagh, Londonderry, Lisburn, Share Centre) • Fundraising/Volunteering/Transcriptionreport to Head Office • 80 staff • 277 volunteers

  12. Services • ECLO - Eye Care Liaison Service • CVC - Community Vision Coordinators • Activity Programmes - 3 locations ( Belfast / Coleraine / Omagh ) • Community Access Service • VAT - Visual Awareness Training • Promotion of Eye Health /Prevention of sight loss

  13. ECLO (3000 patients per year) • Provides interface between hospital sector /sensory support/ community • Helps patients understand eye conditions and their effects • Provides emotional support • Ensures understanding of medication compliance • Refer/signpost on to relevant services

CVC and Activity Service • Work in partnership with sensory support staff in the delivery of reablement services, to improve an individuals quality of life • Deliver individual and group support • Promote independence and peer support through confidence building • Encourage full participation in society • Facilitate social peer mentoring groups

Visual Awareness Training • All staff in Health & Social Care team trained to deliver Visual Awareness Training • All training co-delivered with someone living with sight loss • Vital to success of ECLO service in hospital setting and community optomotrists • Training about to be OCN accredited

Eye Health/Prevention • All staff actively promote eye health/prevention message • Work in partnership with other agencies - in particular long term health conditions to promote eye health and prevention of sight loss - for example, diabetes, stroke • Current Community Engagement Project running in West Belfast Link to ECLO DVD

  20. Children & Youth Service • The RNIB Children & Youth Service provides support for children and young people (0-25 years old) and their families • Support includes:- Signposting and advice- Family Activities- Projects

Share Centre Chalet • Available for Blind and Partially Sighted people to rent at a reduced rate • Newly refurbished • Sleeps up to 14 people • Activities at Share include: • Water Sports • Boat Trips & Orienteering • Indoor and Out Door Climbing Walls Art/Pottery/T-Shirt Making Add Youth Service footage

Benefits Service • Combines intimate knowledge of benefits system with understanding of visual impairment • Full checks or specific enquiries • Telephone or face to face • £1.5m for clients each year • Available to any blind or partially sighted person or their carer in NI • No external funding • Currently internal referrals only

RNIB Benefits Service Case Study • Client is referred to Benefits Service by one of our Community Vision Co-ordinators • Entitlement check indicates eligibility for additional benefits, which we help her apply for • Result: increase in income; also full Housing Benefit award and so no more rates to pay • As the client was awarded Pension Credit we applied for a Community Care Grant and again she was successful • She was able to purchase her first new bed in 37 years and also a new washing machine

  37. Technology & Employment Service Our aim is to help blind and partially sighted people: • to become more employable • to find jobs - who are already in employment, to keep their jobs

  42. Sensory Engagement Project (SEP) SEP is a new cross-border project with two strands: 1. Active Citizens - providing IT and confidence building training to people with sight and hearing loss 2. Models of Excellence - working with libraries, colleges and banks to ensure their services are accessible to people with sight and/or hearing loss Funded through the EU’s INTERREG IVA Programme, managed by the SEUPB

  43. Who's involved? • The project is a partnership between four organisations: - RNIB (lead partner) - RNID- NCBI- DeafHear • The focus is on cross border areas and Greater Belfast is not included
