Helical cooling channel • Helical Cooling Channel (KatsuyaYonehara) • 6D cooling in linear cooling channel • Fill helically shaped combined function magnets + solenoids with GH2 at 77K + add RF • “Siberian Snakes” • Higher energy particles take a longer path
Helical cooling channel 2 • 100 m channel gives cooling factors ~ 5000(!) • Compare with ring coolers ~ 200 • Linear channel ~ 30 • No engineering details yet so expect this number to decrease significantly • Ring cooler cooling factor decreased by ~2 when they included windows etc • Why do we need windows in MICE RF? • Expect more at NuFact • Already hoping to use the MICE apparatus • From TPPP056 “We have studied a 3 meter-long HCC example that could be inserted between the MICE spectrometers at RAL.”
RFQs (Non-expert view) • Spiral 2 built prototype heavy ion RFQ, checked machining accuracy etc, intend to check temperature response • PIAVE successfully ran superconducting heavy ion RFQ • 16O3+ accelerated from beta~0.001->0.04 • PEFP reported on upgrade to fix a number of problems on their RFQ • Frequency hard to tune • Bad “RF seal” • Sharp end on vane created field non-linearities • LBL reported upgrade to their RFQ
Other Stuff • Some posters on FFAGs, nothing dramatic • Some preliminary ideas about building a small cooling ring (2 metre diameter, cooling factor 10) • Cooling with a parametric resonance • Use a resonance to excite low beta in the absorbers -> better cooling • Lots of good MICE progress
WakeField Accelerators (Aside) • Nothing to do with NuFact, but got me interested anyway • Idea is to fire a laser into a plasma, create holes at the focal point which propagate through the plasma at a group velocity ~ c • Holes have very high gradients, ~ 100 GV/m • Free electrons get trapped in the holes and propagate accelerating as they go • SotA: • Either high energy ~ GeV energies but with big energy spread • Or lower energy bunches ~ 100 MeV energies but smaller energy spread • Acceleration to these energies in mm/cm!! • If the beam can be stabilised, potential to go to higher energies…
