    4. 8/30/2012 E ole Gabriel 4 WHAT IS A BRAND? By the AMA, A brand is a name, term, sign, symbol, or design or a combination of them, intended to give a distinction from competitors. It is given a social meaning by marketers and customers. Branding is the art and cornerstone of marketing.

This to include acceptability, awareness, preference, etc It is important to bear in mind the market of reference. A brand can be very poerfull in one market but not necessarily so to other markets.
