English 9 College Prep Mr. Li Foothill Technology High School Fall 2013
I am Mr. Li I was born in Hong Kong; my family emigrated to California when I was two years old. I am very proud to have earned a Bachelor of Arts in English with Program Honors.
Welcome. You are now embarking on a wonderful journey and period of your life that will challenge who you are and what you must do in order to become who you will be.
Read • novels, plays, poetry, and information text • Write • Blogs, summaries, essays, research projects • Speak • Discussions, debates, trials, speeches • You will learn to actively listen In this course, you will…
and that is okay because… You will have to ask for help We are a team; we are a community. You are not alone.
There is also the Neighborhood Map You could use this to provide details on: Incidents where something might have happened Important locations Provide a unique perspective to your composition Consider “The House on Mango Street”
Why Thinking Maps, anyways? Either mapping strategy might help you: • Organize your thoughts • Develop cohesive ideas about your topic/subject • Make connections through visual representations • Helps you as a reader visualize what you are reading
How to use this strategy for your assignment • Consider yourself a resource for a writing project. • How could you use this to map out your own story? • You might consider blending this idea with a Neighborhood Map of your life.
Directions • Decide on a style: straight up mind map, neighborhood map, or a combination of both • Composition must be on a Unlined piece of paper • Must fill entire page • Writing must end up in INK, Marker, or Colored Pencils
What is required • Your name AND the period you are in! • 10 incidents or details about you • On the back of composition, a single paragraph reflection on this activity.
For next session: • Have your composition book with you from now on. • Join Edmodo. • Concept map is due on Monday.
