Location of Each Event 10K Foot March Start PT One Rope Bridge Orienteering
Map Reading 1. Task: Conduct Map Reading 2. Condition: In a classroom environment, given a map, protractor, and pencil 3. Standards: Each team successfully identifies, plot grid coordinates, and perform intersection/ resection and other map reading tasks.
Sequence of events: a. TF committee prepares 8 map reading problems. b. Map reading problem will consist of resection, intersection, straight line road distance, minor terrain features, major terrain features, 6 digit grids, 8 digit grids and actual road distance. c. The Squad leader designates 8 team members to solve each of the 8 problems. Each member will solve one problem as designated by the squad leader. A 10 minute time limit is allotted for each team to solve 8 map reading problems. d. There should be one map set up with all eight problems for each team member to rotate thru and solve their designated problem. One person on the map at any given time. 5. Scoring: a. Teams will be ranked based on the number of correct problems solved within standard time to include fastest time. b. Refer to page six (6) BDE SOP for explanation.
Modified APFT 1. Task. Conduct the Modified APFT event 2. Conditions. During peacetime environment, given competitors in prescribed uniform, equipment for the event and a marked clear run route. 3. Standards. Each team gives 100% in each event and remains in uniform throughout the event.
Sequence of events: a. TF committee prepares 8 map reading problems. b. Map reading problem will consist of resection, intersection, straight line road distance, minor terrain features, major terrain features, 6 digit grids, 8 digit grids and actual road distance. c. The Squad leader designates 8 team members to solve each of the 8 problems. Each member will solve one problem as designated by the squad leader. A 10 minute time limit is allotted for each team to solve 8 map reading problems. d. There should be one map set up with all eight problems for each team member to rotate thru and solve their designated problem. One person on the map at any given time. 5. Scoring: Teams will be ranked based on the number of correct problems solved within standard time to include fastest time. b. Refer to page six (6) BDE SOP for explanation.
. Conduct of Events Push-up: Teams will have 2 minutes to perform as many push-ups as possible with only one team member conducting the event at any time. Teams will conduct this event using any strategy as long as there is one team member performing the event. Teams may switch personnel as often as needed. A total number of correct push-ups performed by the team will be recorded for record. Grading standards is IAW FM 22-5. b. Sit-up: Conduct of sit-up events is same as push-up event. c. 1 mile combat run: This event must be completed within 20 minutes. Team reports to ready line in prescribed uniform and issued team equipment (120ft rope, snap links, radio, map, compass, first aid bag, etc)., 1x litter per team with a designated team member to be a casualty. Designated weight of casualty is 145-155 lbs. There will be no switching of casualty once the event starts. Time start on the command “GO” and stop when entire team crosses the finish line. An inspection of uniform and equipment will be conducted once entire team crosses finish line. TF may have a 1 mile straight course or ½ mile course where teams will go out and return to the start point to complete the event. 7. Penalty Assessment a. 5 min time added for any missing equipment b. 25 minutes added to overall finish time on combat run for failure to meet standard. c. Missing equipment must be replace before next event or team will get eliminated from competition
– Leader Reaction Course (LRC) 1. Task: Negotiate Leader Reaction Course 2. Condition: In daylight environment, given a course with all supporting equipment. 3. Standards: Team will effectively negotiate the course in 15 minutes. Notes: Host school PMS/ SMI select one station for the LRC event from list below. Selection is based on available resource. - Tarp Over - The Bridge - Trolley
Sequence of Events: • a.All teams receive briefings at holding area before moving to ready line. • b. Teams negotiate the course in the fastest and safest manner. • 5. Penalty Assessment: • Each station has Task, condition, and standard. See event execution for penalty • assessment. • 6. Scoring: • a. Penalties will be added to teams finish time for official overall time on the course. • b. Refer to page four (4) for explanations.
TASK- TARP OVER • TEAM LEADER BRIEFING: • Your squad experienced mechanical failure in a Chinook and crashed in Thorny River. Although • the river is slow, it is infested with piranhas. Your entire squad landed on the belly up side of the • raft safely. Because the sensitive side of the raft is exposed to the water the entire squad must flip • the raft over to the puncture proof side before the raft is deflated by thorns. • The only material available is a 12’ by 12’ tarp (raft). • You cannot touch the ground under or around the outside of the tarp as it is infested with • piranhas. Any persons or items that touch the ground will be devoured by the fish. Time does not • stop • INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE EVALUATOR: • Very few squads will have difficulty with this task. A foul occurs when a team member touches • the ground off of the tarp or else touches the ground underneath the tarp. • When a team member touches the ground, penalize the team by having them start the task • over from the beginning.
SAFETY FACTORS: • Caution should be used when the team members climb onto one another to minimize their • space. • EQUIPMENT: • ItemQuantityDimensions • Tarp 1 12’ x 12’ • The tarp should be already lying on the ground prior to the team members arriving to the station. • Time Limit: 10 minutes • Scoring: Refer to page six (6) BDE SOP for explanation.
TASK- BRIDGE TEAM LEADER BRIEFING: Your squad is a forward element of the 3rd ID equipped with top secret short range NBC warheads. You are tasked to cross the Canal and set up offensive stronghold on the other side of the canal. The bridge has been destroyed by enemy personnel in a hasty defense. Because of their retreat your squad has limited amount of time to cross the canal and set up the offensive position with the NBC warheads to strike the enemy personnel. You can not touch the canal with anything because it is a swiftly flowing river that will cause a squad member to disappear and weaken your planks INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE EVALUATOR: Very few squads will have difficulty with this task. A foul occurs when the ground is touched by anything between the drums. Time penalties of 30 seconds drying time will be applied if the planks touch the canal because the water weakens the old planks so that squad members can not cross. 15 seconds if cadets touch the canal (3) The NBC warheads (drum) must also be taken across the canal for the offensive position setup. (4) Squads may use only materials provided.
SAFETY FACTORS: • Safety’s should be used when squad members are crossing or moving boards and/or warheads • (drum) around. • (2.) Advise everyone to be careful with their fingers and backs as they pick up or lay down the • boards. • Some teams may need a rope to help them lift the boards without undue strain. Evaluate the • capabilities of your group and provide one if needed. • EQUIPMENT: • ItemQuantityDimensions • Wooden Plank 2 2’X6”X10’ • Wooden Plank 1 2”X6”X6’ • Concrete Blocks 8 • Drum 5 • Note: TF discretion whether to use blocks or drums, whichever is available. • Time Limit: 15 minutes • Scoring: Refer to page six (6) BDE SOP for explanation
TASK – TROLLEY • TEAM LEADER BRIEFING: • You and your squad are the only remaining members of the 4th SBCT, 2ID to escape • a colossal avalanche. Because of this, one of your squad members is injured and can not • walk. You are required to seek MEDEVAC. During the avalanche only a few items was • salvaged. Your squad must transverse snow traps with shift snow shoes to reach the • MEDEVAC station • The only material available to assist you is 2 wooden boards, and 10 pairs of thick • chord. • You can not: • Tie feet to boards (someone might twist ankle) • Pick up boards once the team has begun the crossing • Use the boards as a bridge or walkway • (4) If you touch the ground during crossing it could result in a grievous injury
SAFETY FACTORS: • (1.) Activity should be conducted on flat groundBe ready to spot the people in front. They are • likely to fall forward if the boards come to a sudden stop • -Do not allow anyone to tie his/her feet to the boards • -Watch out for other people when picking up and moving the boards. • EQUIPMENT: • ItemQuantityDimensions • Boards 2 2”X6”X12’ • Thick Chords 10 Pair 7 feet • Surveyors Tape • Time Limit: 15 minutes • Scoring: Refer to page six (6) BDE SOP for explanation • INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE EVALUATOR: • Very few squads will have difficulty with this task. A foul occurs if anyone falls off the • boards once movement begins. • When a team member fouls, a penalty of two steps backwards on the boards occurs. • (3) MEDEVAC site is 50m (minimum) from start point.
First Aid Task: Treat casualty, call in nine-line medevac, and transport casualty to a designated pick up zone (pz) 2. Condition: In a field environment under daylight conditions, given a casualty with an injury, 9-line medevac GTA card, radio, 1 litter and grid/ location to the PZ. 3. Standards: Teams must successfully treat casualty and not cause further injuries, properly call in a 9-line medevac call, and transport casualty to PZ within quickest time possible.
Notes: a. Teams receives briefing on standards b. Casualty injury will be determined by TF leadership before competition. All teams will treat the same type of injury. c. A team member will be designated as the casualty. He/She will remain the casualty for the remainder of this event. d. Teams will be tested on ability to call in a 9-line medevac using a radio. TF may substitute the absence of a radio by using Motorola, or walkie talkie or any form of communications. Penalty points will be assessed for improper procedures. e. Patient must be prepare for transport before movement to PZ. TF must have litter and all accessories available for use by team. Patients prep for movement and 9-line may be conducted simultaneously. f. TF issue an 8 digits grid coordinates to teams after they submit a 9-line medevac. PZ is no more than 300m and no less than 200m distance from the treatment site. g. Time for event starts on the command “GO” after team receives briefing and stops when casualty arrives at designated PZ.
Scoring: a. Add penalties to course time for overall official finish time. b. Refer to page six (6) BDE SOP for explanation. 5. Penalty Assessment: a. 1 minute added for each first Aid step in treating casualty not followed. b. 1 minute added for causing further injuries to the casualty c. 1 minute added for each steps in 9-line medevac missed or improperly transmitted. d. 5 minutes added for improperly preparing casualty for movement to PZ.
Scenario (SALUTE) 1. Task: Conduct scenario (SALUTE) event 2. Conditions: In a daylight environment, given a terrain model with an objective scenario. 3. Standards: teams will have 1 minute to view/ scan the objective with two minutes to fill in SALUTE report.
Notes: • Construct a terrain model with a minimum size of 5’x5’. Built an objective with actual • terrain, Troops, vehicles, tanks, weapons, concertina wire, buildings and anything you • expect to see on an objective. • b. After the briefing on task to be performed, teams may gather around the terrain model • and will be given 1 minute to observe and gather PIRs. • c. No notes or pictures taken during this 1 minute of observation. • d. Once 1 minute has expired, place cover back on terrain model. • e. Teams will have 2 minutes to fill in a SALUTE report using gathered PIRs. • f. TF creates a standard SALUTE report format to be use by competitors during TF • competition. • 4. Scoring: • Scoring will be based on number of PIRs gathered and annotated on SALUTE report. • b. Ranking is based on detailed PIRs • c. Refer to page six (6) BDE SOP for explanation.
Penalty Assessment: • a. 20 minutes added for cheating (writing/ taking pictures of OBJ during observation • period). • b. Automatic elimination of both teams caught sharing answers from OBJ. Same goes if • Cadre/ Cadet caught giving info to their teams on what they saw or heard on content of • OBJ.
– • Hand Grenade Assault Course • TASKS: Employ hand grenades. • 2. CONDITIONS: During daylight hours, given three hand grenades per team members • and three targets to engage. • 3. STANDARDS: Throw and land a grenade inside designated target apparatus. One • grenade for each target.Engage each target within 30 seconds
Note: a. One target has a single silhouette and is located at a range of 35 meters. A second target has a window and located 20 meters away. The window dimension will be 2ft by 2ft. A third target consists of one standard two‑soldier fighting position without overhead cover located at a range of 20 meters and containing one visible silhouette target. b. Competitor will use one grenade for each target apparatus. Weather competitor made first throw or not, he/she will move on to the next target. c. Actual grenade body with fuse will be use for this event. 4. Sequence of Events: a. Brief team members on standards for this event. b. Issue team member three grenades each. c. Negotiate the course d. Assess any necessary penalties. 5. Scoring: a. There will be one point for each grenade successfully placed in the target area. b. Determine team average by adding the number of grenade each competitor placed in the target area and in standard time. c. Refer to page six (4) BDE SOP for explanation. 6. Penalty Assessment: a. Failure to place grenade in target apparatus will results in zero points.
Window 2-manfighting position 35 m circle 35 Meters 20 Meters 20 Meters Grenade Assault Course
Rope Bridge Task. Construct a one-rope bridge. Conditions. At a field location with a natural or man-made constructed obstacle, no less than 65 or greater than 85 feet across. During daylight hours under existing weather conditions, given a 120 foot rope, repel seat ropes, and snap links; wearing the prescribed uniform. Standards. All teams will safely construct and cross single rope bridge without losing any equipment. Actual water obstacles must be negotiated if available.
Notes: There will be no pre-tied knots in the main rope. The first and last team members are Required to wear a safety line when crossing the obstacle; all other team members will cross the rope using a rappel seat and snap link. The rope bridge must be anchored at near and far side. The far side is anchored with a round turn and two half hitches. Snap link can be used as a quick release. The Wireman’s knot must be used for the near side tighten system. Team members must be attached to a rope when crossing using the repel seat. Time will stop during the event if a rope or snap link breaks. If this occurs, the run will be nullified, the equipment will be replaced, and the team will restart the event from the beginning. b. Refer to FM 3-97.61 (mountaineering), SH 21-76 (ranger handbook) for guidance on constructing a single rope bridge. c. All equipment and LBE must be carried across the obstacle. Cadets will carry their assigned weapons to include first and last cadets. d. Use only standard/ approved military ropes and snap links. e. The rope you bring is the one you will use. (Exception is made if prior arrangement is made with hosting school.
f. “Speed tighteners" (metal, wooden, plastic, etc.) are not allowed. g. Cadets on either bank may assist each team members. h. Give safety briefing. Provide for downstream water safety (e.g., safety lines, boat, lifeguards) as appropriate. Penalty Assessment: a. 5 minutes for any knot left in the main rope after crossing b. 5 minutes for the first or last cadet if either fails to secure the main rope to their waist with an end-of-line bowline and a snap link. This is a must. g. 5 minutes for each knot incorrectly tied
Scoring: • a.Time will start on command “GO” and will stop once entire team crosses water obstacle and last • man crossing finish line. • b. Penalty assessment will be calculated based on standards violations during the conduct of event. • All standards violation will be added to finish time to determine overall standing in this event. • c. Refer to page six (6) BDE SOP for explanation.
Navigation & Movement • Task:Conduct navigation and movement • 2. Condition:In a daylight environment, given teams in appropriate uniform, team equipments, and a land • navigation course consisting of 8 points with no less than 1000m apart. • 3. Standard: Teams will have 2hrs to acquire as many points as time will allow Notes: a.Teams will carry all team equipments throughout the navigation event. b. Teams may cross-load equipment amongst team members once they cross the start line but not before. c. No team member will be carry at anytime during event unless in a case of real world emergency.
Conduct of Event: • Team will stay together and move as a team during entire event. The course will consist of 8 points. The first three • points must be navigated in order and they will be no less than 1000m between points. The remaining five • points may be navigated in any order as the team leader deem necessary and they will be no less than 1000m in • between. This means teams will go to the first point, followed by the second and third point in that order. Points 4-8 • may be navigated in any order. • A cadre/cadet may be use to man the first three points. They will sign off on the teams score card including time • arrived on location. They will redirect teams that are wayward and or out of order and not sign their score card. • Teams must monitor time and pace throughout the course. • An inspection of uniform and equipment will be conducted after team returns to the finish line.
Scoring: • a. Teams must find the first three points in order to receive points. 30 seconds is earned for • each of the first three points found in order. An additional 15 sec is earned for points four thru • eight. A total time earned will be added and then subtracted from their finish time. • b. Teams will then be placed in accordance with their time. • c. Refer to page six (6) BDE SOP for explanation. • 6. Penalty Assessment • a. 5 minutes added for each missing equipment • b. 2hrs added for failure to negotiate the course to standard to include any course violations.
te. • 10-Kilometer Forced March • Task: Negotiated the 10K Foot march which measure the cadet's physical strength and • endurance. • Conditions: During daylight, under existing weather conditions, given competitors in prescribed • uniform and equipments, and a clearly marked route. • Standards: Ranger Challenge teams must complete the 10-K Forced March within 90 minutes • while maintaining uniformity and having all prescribed equipment. • Note: • This is the last event of the competition. • b. Host must have lead and trail vehicle throughout the conduct of this event. • c. All competitors will have 2x 1qts filled with water before starting of event. • d. Host unit may have water on the trail and lead vehicle or place them on checkpoints • along the route
e. If a team decides to carry their guidon on the foot march, it will be with the team the entire route. • This is not a mandatory item for the foot march. • f. The guidon bearer will be the only team member carrying a weapon on top of the Ruck Sack or at • sling arm. • g. Kevlar Helmet will be worn at all times during the event. • h. The Army authorized boots are the only authorized boots for this event. (No exceptions) • i. Give safety briefing. • j. Teams may cross load equipments during the foot march. This action may begin after crossing the • start line but not before. Team members must have their own gear and equipment before team • cross finish line. • k. No team member will be carry by any means during this event. • l. An inspection will be conducted once entire team crosses finish line. Penalties will be awarded • for missing items and equipments.
Scoring: Penalties will be added to foot march time for overall and official finish time. b. Refer to page six (6) BDE SOP for explanation. 5. Penalties: 5-minute added for each piece of equipment missing. b. 5 minutes added for dumping water out of canteen (penalty is for each canteen). d. Team will be drop from competition when caught carrying a team member. Absolutely no pushing or pulling of any team member while on the foot march course. e. 30 minutes added for each member not having their own gear/ equipment after crossing the finish line.
Commander’s Challenge • Note: The Commander’s Challenge event will be issue by the BDE CDR or CSM directly to the Host school PMS/ SMI. It will be issued a few days prior to TF competition date. • Host school will ensure the Challenge event remains confidential until execution day. • It should be briefed to all graders the morning of competition
Briefing on how Ranger Challenge will Operate 1. Order of the teams will be chosen after the Orientation Brief and the order will remain through out the competition 2. Ranger Challenge will start off on Friday with the Map Reading Exam 3. Next the Modified APFT will kick off early Saturday with 1 Team being tested at a time 4. The LRC will start after everyone is complete with the APFT each team will be separated with 15 min interval 5. After that Team is complete with that event that Team will move on to the next event and so on until it is complete with the 10K Foot March Special Instruction to Cadre 1. Cadre are responsible for bringing everything for their event and to have their event setup for testing prior to Saturday of the competition. Furthermore, each school will provide adequate personnel support for their event. 2. If Cadre have any questions on their event of what materials they need, or about the Competition in general, coordinate with Cal Poly cadre ASAP.
Chow Plan Team Guam will have Breakfast morning of the 13th All Teams will have Dinner in the DFAC after the Orientation Brief All teams member will have 2 MREs somewhere on their person for For Breakfast and Lunch on Saturday to eat when ever they have time. Dinner will be a BBQ at or around Bldg 831 (Billets) 5. Sunday will be a hot Breakfast before the Closing Ceremony begins
Tactical Operation Center & Billets TOC Will be responsible of all operations as followed: - MAJ Stone , LTC Lecaros and Cadet BN Staff are responsible for TOC Ops - keeping the Ranger Challenge on schedule - ensuring all events are set-up on time - collecting of all the score sheets - ensuring that the score sheets are correct - tracking all scores and ensuring all teams are place properly according to their ranking - will plan, prepare and execute the sequence of events for opening/closing ceremony -ensuring they have lines of commutations set with each event encase of any problems or emergency rises up - any scoring dispute TOC will be contacted immediately and the OIC of Ranger Challenge will have the final approval (once team has left the event, they can not come back later to dispute the scoring or any issues with the competition) - TOC will ensure proper Troop to Task being conducted to run each event
Billets 2 . Barracks will be at Bldg 831 - each team will be issued a 20 bed room - keep rooms and common areas clean and organized - no eating in the rooms, only the common area (day room) - no smoking is allowed in the Barracks - all Ranger Challenge Females will be in a separate room - no alcohol in the barracks - clean up after yourself - all barracks room will be inspected and cleared by MSG Manzanares or SFC Cruz before a schools leaves - no sexual harassment - be Professional and represent your unit and school with honor
