SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES • List the benign disorders of oesophagus • Describe the causes, diagnosis and treatment of Oesophageal perforation • Describe the causes and management of corrosive burns and benign strictures of the oesophagus • Describe the types, diagnosis and treatment of hiatus hernia • Describe mechanism, diagnosis and treatment of Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease • List the benign tumours of the oesophagus • Describe briefly the clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of benign tumours of the oesophagus • Describe the aetiopathology, diagnosis and management of oesophageal malignant tumours of the oesophagus

  5. Benign Strictures Of The Oesophagus • Burns (hot fluids) • Trauma ( external injuries or foreign bodies) • Ulceration by reflux oesophagitis • Ulceration due to diphtheria, typhoid • Surgical anastomosis sites • Congenital (lower third)

  8. TREATMENT • Mainly Surgical • If not fit for surgery – conservative measures to treat GERD
