Intro to Photography • What is photography? • -it is actually “light drawing” • -LIGHT is your main element…without it photography doesn’t exist • -it is SCIENCE (physics, chemistry, optics) and ART (craftsmanship, aesthetics, value, contrast, composition) • Photography combines the physical and technical with the aesthetic & beautiful!
Photos FREEZE time… • -record distant objects like stars and galaxies • -capture molecules and atoms • -record the horror of war and miracle of birth
The Photography BUILDING BLOCKS are: • LIGHT • TIME • SUBJECT • A camera is simply a lightproof box with an opening that admits light and a device that focuses the light on to a light sensitive material which records the image. • Focusing device = lens • Light/Time controlling device = shutter
Exposure = (1) the actual recorded image AND (2) the time needed for the image to record properly. • 3 things control exposure: • -amount of light camera allows in (f-stop) • -length of time light enters into camera (shutter speed) • -film’s sensitivity to light (film speed or ISO)
Camera Obscura…where it all began • The first “cameras” were actually rooms with a tiny hole in one wall. You could see the exterior areas projected upside down on the opposite wall. Artists began using these “drawing rooms” as tracing devices. Eventually the “room” became a “box”.
Pinhole…it’s this simple! • All you need to create a camera is a light tight container… • and a pinhole!!! You can record images on photo paper or film.
Pinhole…how we see and record! • Images are recorded upside down…and the size of the lens or pinhole opening (aperture) does affect the image!
Homework assignment… • Go to www.jankapoor.net and view her pinhole work…especially her “Oakland Series” with her 360 Hexagonal pinhole camera. She’s an Atlanta photographer and does pinhole and alternative processing. • In her site go to Gallery then “Everything Else”…this is where you’ll find “Oakland”. Then look at the rest of the site.
