ART 1050-001: Intro to Photography Mark Laniewski 2 May 2012 Final Project
The final project for this course was to compile a photo essay related to our chosen major. At the time that these photographs where shot my chosen major was Recreation Resource Management. This major focuses on the human dimensions of our nations natural resources; managing lands to accommodate multiple uses ranging from recreation to preserving the natural values. Graduating with this degree I am looking forward to a job with a City, State, or Federal agency, which can be set in a wide variety of outdoor environments. Due to time constraints I was only able to travel to a handful nearby locations for my photographs. The beauty of the outdoors especially near Salt Lake City has been a major inspiration to my chosen degree and my goal was to portray the beauty of a variety of environments while incorporating a human aspect of how the land is utilized. Each photo was taken on either National Forest Land, at a State Park, or on BLM Land; areas that I would like to one day be employed at.
As I traveled from location to location for this assignment I was exposed to a variety of environments from water-fronts, to deserts, and to forests. In these environments I experienced an array of weather conditions: unseasonable heat, monsoon type rain, high winds, and a blizzard. Not only did this make the photography difficult, but it also kept the public away; a aspect that I would have liked to include my photo essay. Thankfully we learned about dealing with this kind of issue in the Photography course, a method called “Finding the Next Right Answer”. A method in which the photographer (the artist) must find a way to deal with what they have on hand. Stopping at campgrounds and picnic areas to take pictures; with quite bland results; I began to notice that the campgrounds and picnic areas where not in optimum locations in respect to where the main attraction was in the relative area. I realized that the people that planned the areas were also dealing with “Finding the Next Right Answer” type scenarios. They are dealing with many obstacles such as budgets, environmental impacts, and legal responsibilities all while trying to accommodate the publics recreational demands for the area.
