Work Experienceand Work Placement • Time spent in the workplace as learners, not employees • Unpaid – no wages, goods or services • An opportunity to explore possible career options • A supervised activity by an industry mentor • Observe and assist with designated and agreed work tasks • Can help develop new work related skills and competencies • Receive a workplace report • Learn workplace behaviours appropriate to the industry
What is Work Experience? • Work experience is generally unpaid work everyday for a week or two. • It helps to see if you like a particular job and get some skills and experience to make you more appealing to potential employers.
Work Experience Procedures • Students complete work experience in the school holidays. • Exemption for apprenticeship trials – form to cover • Primary schools in PD Days, end of Year, Exam breaks • Students locate their own experience. • Give ideas, phone call script • Application form completed • Confirmation with employer • Forward documents to employer • Confirm placement with student • Work Experience diary and evaluations
Work Experience Procedures • If employer has been used in the last 12 months, management has not changed and/or they host a WPL student, we do not conduct site visits. • If they do not, then we conduct a site visit prior to the student commencing, using the checklist • When students apply, they must submit a WorkSafe Certificate and/or White Chard (where appropriate) for their first Work Experience each year (induction).
Formal Work Experience • Year Certificate I in General Education for Adults • 4 x work experience of 1 week • 2 x exam periods Terms 2 and 4 • 2 x end Terms 1 and 3 • Practical Placement competency • WPL Endorsed Program – Mode 2 • 20 x Employability Skills (5/place) • 110 hours total all year (Avg. 40hr/place)
What is Work Placement? • Work placement is a planned opportunity in a quality host workplace that enables senior school students studying particular industry-based courses to practise and develop their industry competencies and their employability skills in a vibrant real work context.
Work Placement • ONSITE cluster of schools. • 6 Catholic, 1 independent • Students apply during Course Selection in August • Must choose Workplace Learning Course • Interviews in September • Panel of 1 ONSITE, 1 Industry, 1 school coordinator, where possible • Successful students notified by November, with Induction “date saver”
Work Placement • Students attend an Induction Day before commencing • Off campus • Work, professional dress • Covers • Course structure • Student and Employer rights and responsibilities • OH&S • EEO (bullying etc) • Career Development • Logbook • Parents attend Information Evening
Work Placement • Students complete 2 placements: • 1 x 16 days February – May • 1 x 110 hours June – September • Attend the workplace every Tuesday • Choose Religious Education, English, Workplace Learning and 3 other courses • WPL 1A1B = Year 11 • WPL 1C1D = Year 12
Workplace Learning • Semester 1 • WPL Course (1A1B OR 1C1D) Assessments • 16 days + 20 Employability Skills (Placement 1) • Semester 2 • VET Qualification • Cert I Business in Year 11 • Cert II Workplace Practices Year 12 • WPL Endorsed Program Mode 2 • 110 hours + 20 Employability Skills (Placement 2)
