Polychlorinated biphenyls are a group of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) • Bioaccumulation by the high lipophilicity • Global prevalence in the environment • High resistance to physical, chemical and biological factors • The ability to have a toxic effect on organisms in very small doses
Biochemical markers of exposure of pollutants, to assess the welfare of the functional state of fish: • Indicators of activity of enzymes metabolizing xenobiotics (monooxygenases, glutathione) • The intensity of lipid peroxidation (LP) • Levels of antioxidant system (AOS)
The main local source of chemical pollution of water reservoirs - Cherepovets Industrial Complex
Objective - to compare the values of antioxidant system (AOS) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) level of accumulation of total PCBs, as well as certain groups of congeners in the liver of bream from the Rybinsk Reservoir to assess the health of fish
Lyubets Pervomayka Sampling stations:
Biochemical parameters: • The content of malondialdehyde (MDA) • The content of glutathione (GSH) • Catalase activity • The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) • The activity of glutathione-s-transferase (GST) • The content of total protein
Values of total and individual groups of PCB congeners in the liver of bream from different areas of the Rybinsk reservoir
The contribution of separate groups of congenersPCBs in the general maintenance of PCBs in a liver of bream from different areas of the Rybinsk reservoir
Distribution of contentof MDA in a liver of bream on stations
Distribution of contentof GSH in a liver of bream on stations
Distribution of activityof GST in a liver of bream on stations
Distribution of activityof catalase in a liver of bream on stations
Distribution of activityof SOD in a liver of bream on stations
Conclusions: • High level of MDA content and low activity of AOS enzymes in the liver of bream from Lübz due to the high level of pollution of the reservoir area • Bream in the Pervomaika is in a better state than in an area Lübz • Identified gaps in AOS and LPO in the liver of bream for the studied stations are well correlated with data on the extent of anthropogenic impact in these areas of the Rybinsk Reservoir, which is confirmed by results on the content of PCBs in the liver of these fish • Performance SLA and LP can be used as a biomarker to assess the health status of fish
