  2. Introduction • Significant issue. • Worst form of distracted driving. • Many people are taking a stand. • Laws and punishments are being passed. • There is an ongoing debate.

  3. The Facts -3,092 deaths. -416,000 injuries. - 1,000 just texting and driving. -4.6 seconds to read message. -Risk of crash increases.

  4. How Dangerous is it? • Worst form of distracted driving. • Requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention. • Can lower brain activity by 37%. • Teenage involvement.

  5. Texting and Drunk Driving -NYSU professor -six times more dangerous. -Taken lead. -Leading cause of death among teens. -Drunk driving deaths dropped. -Texting and driving deaths has jumped.

  6. Experiments Testing Texting and Driving -Auto industry experiment -Break Time Results: Unimpaired= .54 feet Legally drunk= 4 feet Drunk= 36 feet Texting= 70 feet.

  7. Laws • Ray LaHood • 41 states have laws. • Positive results in many states. • Connecticut saw phone usage drop 57%. • North Carolina dropped use by 20%.

  8. Punishments • $20 is first offense. • $50 is second offense. • Some states = license point deduction. • Harsher states exist. • Alaska worst penalty. • Many statestrying to increase severity.

  9. The Debate • Some people disagree. • Reporters argue that laws: • Encourage covertness • Double blindness • Waste resources • Provide bias reporting and skewed data • Is not a significant problem
