Grade 9 Digital Learning Project (DLP) An introduction to the digital portion of the class
What is the DLP • The DLP is an initiative of the WRDSB in which students in grade 9 English are invited to participate. • It is intended to enrich the classroom by using board provided netbooks and online tools • It is intended to provide learning opportunities that focus on collaboration, creativity, communication and critical thinking • You will still learn in the traditional classroom, but will also have opportunities to learn using online tools to encourage “anytime, anywhere” learning
Digital Code Of Conduct In all online activities, the Code of Digital Conduct applies. Think of your DLP related activities and assignments as an extension of the physical classroom– all rules and expectations still apply. If you ever need to review the code of conduct just click on the link on school or class webpages.
Netbooks • Netbooks will be used in class • We will need to share them as we do not have a 1:1 ratio • They have internet access on the school’s wireless, therefore, the boards filter applies (limits) • You will use the same netbook each time • Storage, charging, and care– (listen up– you need to know this)
Other Devices in the Classroom • You may choose to use your smartphone or personal laptop in class • If you decide to use a personal devices, please take care to store and secure it properly– The school is not responsible for the security of personal devices. • You are NOT required to have a personal device in class.
Online Tools We will use a variety of online tools to communicate and to complete various activities including: • Waterworks (school email) • Weebly (class website and blog) • Facebook • Twitter • Todays’ meet • Google Docs
Things to Know & Bring • Your waterworks email address is: _______________ @ins.wrdsb.ca(connect login)* • You CANNOT save a document on the netbook, therefore, cloud computing (save it to google docs) or saving to a USB stick is necessary • Earphones • Pen, pencil, paper • Remember all important notes, handouts, documents will be available online. • Class website & blog: http://jwatersclasses.weebly.com
Tips and Tricks • Since we are using social media as a part of the classroom you may wish to create a school only account using your school email. • For example, you may wish to have a separate Facebook account and Twitter account • This will allow you to have an account that you can use for school purposes only.
Digital Citizenship • This really means digital ethics • Think about the Digital Code of Conduct • Remember your behaviour online is a reflection of you in real life • Be kind, considerate and thoughtful when online • Be mindful of what you post
Digital Footprint • At every website that you visit, in every comment you post, you leave a digital footprint. Because your digital footprint will be with you for a very long time, it is a crucial skill to know how to manage your public identity. • If you manage social network sites like Facebook properly the bigger potential of your digital footprint could be realized.
Homework • Login into your Waterworks email • Friend JM Waters on Facebook, so I can start a class group (look for the photo of me wearing sunglasses) • Check and bookmark the class website http://jwatersclasses.weebly.com
Food for thought… • How do you present yourself online? • How do others view you online • Read the following blog post by a Mother of teenaged boys: http://givenbreath.com/2013/09/03/fyi-if-youre-a-teenage-girl/ • Once you read the article go to the class blog: http://jwatersclasses.weebly.com/eng-1di-class-blog.html and complete the activity by responding to it. Be sure to put your first name on the response
