Introduction-1 • The Greek word, makarios, is used several times in the book of Revelation • The same word used in the first part of Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount” • The nine sayings found there are often referred to as the beatitudes • Because this word in Latin is beatitudo
Introduction -2 • Jesus used this word to describe those who would be His disciples • The word means fortunate, happy, and enjoying the favor of God • That favor and happiness comes from possessing the qualities used in the “Sermon on the Mount” and here • All right thinking people want to be happy and enjoy Divine favor • Lest us examine three of the beatitudes in the Revelation this afternoon
Blessed is He who Reads-1 • At the very beginning his Revelation John wrote, Blessed is he who reads the words of this prophesy- V3A • This does not refer to our reading the scriptures, though there is great benefit in doing so • It refers to one who would publicly read this book to others • There were many christians in the 1stcentury who could not read • They could only know God’s word from a verbal communication of it
Blessed is He who Reads--2 • This public reading was similar to preaching • It is a great privilege and blessing to help others know God’s word- Rom. 10:14-15 • Today most people can read the Bible for themselves, but there are still many who have not heard the gospel in its purity and its completeness • We need to seek and to use opportunities to communicate God’s word to others
Blessings in Knowing God’s Word-1 • There are great blessings in knowing all of the scriptures 1. The psalmist said it is a “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”- Psa 119:105 2. The gospel is God’s power to save all people- Rom. 1:16 3. It warns us of dangers that lie ahead • The Revelation warned christians about persecutions that were shortly to come upon them
Blessings in Knowing God’s Word-2 4. God’s word corrects us when we stray from the right way- II Tim. 3:16 5. It encourages us and gives us comfort in times of trial and sorrow- II Cor. 1:3-4 6. It gives us hope in Christ- Tit. 1:2I Thess. 4:18 7. It enables us to comfort others in their sorrow- 8. It can furnish us for every good work- II Tim. 3:17
Blessed are they who Hear and Keep-1 • Each of the seven letters to the churches contains the exhortation- “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit say to the churches.” • To hear means more than to allow the sound of words to fall on our ears • It means to heed, consider and to pay attention to what is heard • Many people have heard the words of Christ and His apostles without benefit- Mt. 13:14
Blessed are they who Hear and Keep-2 • Because of a lack of interest, prejudice or devotion to sin or error • We must hear with a desire to know and understand God’s word- Lk. 8:18 • Hearing and keeping are joined together in this beatitude • This thought is repeated throughout the scriptures • Those who enjoy God’s favor are those who put into practice what they hear
Blessed Are those who Hear and Keep-3 • Hearing provides an opportunity to know what God expects of us • So that we can do those things that will please Him • Hearing also brings responsibility to the hearer • To evaluate and to act upon what he/she has heard • Jesus said that those who do as he taught would be blessed- Jn. 13:17
Blessed Are those who Hear and Keep-4 • God’s word demand’s a response- Isa. 55:11 • One will either believe and obey it or reject it • To fail to obey God’s word is to reject it • Those who reject it are going to be judged by the words they have rejected- Jn. 12:48 • Hearing God’s word is of no benefit with obeying it- Jas. 1:22 • Hearing without keeping only condemns the hearer- Lk. 12:47
A Similar Beatitude-1 • Found at the end of the Revelation • It contains the promise typically associated with the beatitudes • “Blessed are those who do His commandments,”- Rev. 22:14 • Promises guaranteed: • Entrance into the holy city • Which represents Heaven • The home of the saved- 21:24
A Similar Beatitude-2 2. The right to the tree of life • The tree from which Adam and eve were barred because of their sin- Gen. 3:22 • Which represents eternal life • These promises should encourage us to remain faithful so that we can enjoy them in the future • Are you keeping God’s commandments this afternoon?
