  1. Happy Wednesday! Take out a piece of paper to take notes. I will hand back your article to you. Pick up the Annotation Handout. The faster you are, the more time you will have today to work!

  2. Annotation: • You will be reading and annotating all 4 of your articles eventually. Today, it will be just one. • You will be graded on the quality and number of annotations. • Annotation has 2 parts: (more about this next) • Mark something • Write something about it • You will make a MINIMUM10 annotations on each page of your articles. (This is the minimum. If you are looking for a higher grade, you should annotate more.)

  3. Annotation: • Mark Something • Underline • Highlight • Circle or box • Number to match your 4 subtopics (1-4 ONLY!) • Different marks mean different things • Be selective—don’t highlight entire text. • Write something about it: • Which subtopic? (works well with boxes) (I would give a letter to each question under each subtopic: 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d; 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d, etc.) • Main idea/detail • Questions (Is this true? Where did they get this info? Why…? How…? When…? Where…?) • Summarize long info into your own words • Write about connections between different facts in ONE article, or connections between multiple articles. I will be looking for variety in your annotations. Don’t ONLY list subtopics, or ONLY list main ideas and details, etc.

  4. Annotation troubleshooting: • My article is 372 pages long! • Choose 5-10 pages worth of text to annotate. Lightly cross out the rest. • There isn’t enough stuff on each page to make 10 annotations. • Reconsider using this article. It may not have enough information to be useful to you. • I don’t know what to annotate. • Look at the annotation handout. Subtopics tend to be the easiest place to start.

  5. Live annotation! • I will annotate my article for you in class. • As I do this, you will follow along with your own article. • Use your annotation guide to help you do this.

  6. Summary: • For each article, you will write a summary 100-150 words long about the main ideas of the article. • If you do it on the computer, Word will count the words for you.  • You need to write your own summary. DO NOT use an abstract or summary from the database. If you use a summary that you did not personally write, that is plagiarism and there will be serious administrative consequences. • Easiest to write the summary after you finish the annotation. • You began a summary on your worksheet. This will be a good place to start.

  7. NASA Article Summary The article is about how to fund NASA. The budget for NASA has gone up and down over the years and NASA has to convince Congress that they are worth funding. However, their focus on space exploration might have to change as they prove they can become more efficient with the money allocated to them by the US government. While President Obama sounds like he wants to give more money to NASA, the Republicans are gunning to reduce its already slim budget. The article also gives a quick overview of America’s feelings about the space program and how things have changed since the first shuttle was sent into space. Word Count: 109

Things to notice about the summary: • The word count is included at the bottom! • It is free of grammatical and spelling mistakes.  • No direct quotes or specific details are used. • The ideas came from my annotations (if you summarized after each paragraph in your article, you might be able to use that in your summary!) • No fancy vocabulary is needed. • Anyone who reads your summary should be able to understand what your article is about. • It’s typed!

  9. Your turn • THOROUGHLY annotate your article. You will be thankful later on that you did a good job the first time around. • If you see this article isn’t going to be helpful, then find a new one ASAP and repeat the whole process. Don’t wait until later. If you say to me later that this article doesn’t work, I will turn around and ignore you. This will be my way of saying, “I told you so. Go find another article.” This would be tragic and sad!  • Your annotated article and typed summary should be done for Monday when you come to class. No excuses or “I forgot”! • On Monday, we will evaluate your essay using the SCARAB rubric. This will be the tool you use to write your Evaluation Essay on this article.
