Municipal Elections • Every town/city is divided into voting areas called "wards" (e.g. GGMSS is in Ward 1) Mississauga Wards • People who live in the ward elect 1 councillor to sit on City Council • People also vote for a mayor Mississauga.ca - City Hall - Mayor & Council
Federal and Provincial Elections • Each province is divided into voting areas called "ridings" (e.g. GGMSS is in the riding of Mississauga South) GTA Ridings • In each riding, a number of candidates will run in the election • Most of these candidates belong to a political party (e.g. the Liberals, NDP, etc.) • People who live in the riding get to vote for ONE candidate only
The candidate who gets the most votes wins the election in that riding • S/he gets a "seat" in Parliament and is the MP or MPP for that riding • The current MPP is Charles Sousa http://www.charlessousa.ca/ • The current MP is Paul Szabo http://webinfo.parl.gc.ca/MembersOfParliament/ProfileMP.aspx?Key=128094&Language=E
Who becomes Prime Minister or Premier? • At the end of the election, they count how many candidates from each party won a seat • The party with the most seats wins the election and becomes the ruling government • That party's leader becomes the Prime Minister or the Premier
REMEMBER!!! • We do not vote for our Prime Minister or Premier (like they do in the USA) but we do vote for our Mayor • The leader of the winning party gets to be PM or Premier • The leader of the political party that comes in second place becomes the Leader of the Opposition
