How to get involved • Volunteer at the drivers meeting, there will be a sign up sheet available at the registration table prior to the meeting if you want to get on early
Come Prepared Items you need to bring with you include • Water, Sunscreen, Hat, Glasses • Approved Life Jackets must be worn (racing jackets don’t count) • Radio provided by TORC and to be returned to TORC at end of day • Check Batteries • Ensure you have Flags on board • Ensure you have a spare marker buoy on board • Bail the water out of the boat for the next crew • Check gas levels
Be On Time • Being on time means our race day will proceed at an organized pace. • First flight judges must be at docks 15 minutes prior to start of race day • Continuing flight judges must be at dock ready to help with docking and return to course within a 5 minute time period to allow consistent operators a chance for a break • When you take the boat out, ensure all boats are off race course and clear to go on, anchor yourself in the center of the course lined up with the entrance and exit turn pins • At the end of your flight, you will return to the dock so others can take your position
Flags • Preparatory Green Flag • When the referee calls for it, Green means 5 minutes until start of race, all boats in the heat are now allowed to enter course and proceed to designated milling area • 1 minute White Flag • Called by the referee, White signals 1 Minute to start, clock starts motion, Green goes down, White goes up • Green Flag Racing • Clock hits zero, White flag down, Green flag up, racing begins • Last Lap White Flag • Throw White flag up, Green flag down when the first place boat crosses the start/finish for last lap • Checkered Flag • You guessed it, first boat over the star/finish line. Boats do not return to pits until last place boat has crossed start/finish line.
Specialty Flags • Yellow Flag • Problems on race course - Continue with caution • Black Flag • Return to pits, do not leavepits, thisalsogoes up when last boat has cossedstart/finish at end of heat • Red Flag • Competitionisstopped - stop DEAD in water. • Yellow/White crossed • False Start (everyone jumps the gun in the opinion of the referee whomay call restart) display the Yellow and White Flags crossed and when in the opinion of the Referee the field is ready for a restart, the one (1) minute gun will be fired and the starting signals repeated as described above.
Making a Call • Making a final call is up to the Referee on shore • As a turn boat judge, you have 2 members in the boat, each watches their own half of the turn, entrance to middle, and middle to exit • At the end of the heat, the Referee will ask “Turn 1 was the racing clean?” “Turn 2 was the racing clean?” • You answer either Yes or No • If you answer No, cite the incident and be certain about what you saw. • Make a call as if you were the one driving the offending boat, be 100% certain
Driving Offences • Bearing Away • A boat shall not bear out of her course so as to hinder another in passing to starboard. When one (1) or two (2) boats is obliged to keep clear, the other shall not alter her course so as to involve risk of fouling. • Overlap • An overlap may only be established when two (2) boats are on the same course or approximately the same course and the overtaking boat has no longer a free choice on which side she shall pass. The inside boat may gain the right of way by establishing an overlap even after the outside boat has altered her helm for the purpose of rounding the mark. • Overtaking • An overtaking boat shall, as long as an overlap exists, keep clear of the boat which is being overtaken. The overtaking boat must not alter her course until, for Stock Outboard and Outboard Performance Craft Divisions a one (1) boat length of open water exists and for the Inboards four (4) boat lengths of open water exist and Grand Prix Division a six (6) boat length of open water exists.
Passing Marks • Passing Marks • Should, however, an overlap exist between two (2) boats when both of them are about to pass a mark on the required side, then the outside boat must give the inside boat room to pass clear of the mark • Missing a buoy • Contestants who have failed to turn a mark must return immediately and circle to the left, inside the course and pass the missed marker on the proper side, keeping clear of the balance of the field in so doing. • Hitting and damaging a buoy • Automatic Disqualification, notify referee at end of heat.
Accidents • If there is an accident or a boat loses power on the course and the boat is clear of competition (safely inside of the course is considered clear) then throw the yellow flag and call it on the radio • If there is an accident or a boat loses power on the course in an obstructive or dangerous manner, throw the red flag and call it on the radio, assist once it is safe and you feel comfortable in doing so • You may be needed to tow a boat on occasion, again proceed at a level comfortable for you, we have a safety boat on course, keep clear of it at all times • If an incident occurs that is beyond your comfort zone do what you can to assist if possible and keep clear for the safety boat to arrive
