Cycling • In the Netherlands the bicycle is probably the most common way of transportation • There are special alleys, with their own traffic signals, just for bicycles on the roads (all those alleys together make around 20.000 kilometres!) • Maps for cyclists, bike rentals and repair services are to be found practically everywhere • Dutch people are big fans of cycling championships
Football • The Netherlands national football team plays in a bright orange shirt. The best national clubs are Ajax, PSV Einhdoven ,Az Alkmaar and Feyenoord • They are known as “The Mechanical Orange” • Most famous players: Johan Cruijff, Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Dennis Bergkamp, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rinus Michels • Football stadiums Amsterdam Arena and Feijenoord Stadion have UEFA's 5-star rating • KNVB is the largest sports federation in the country with 1.076.759 members
Tennis • One of the most successful tennis players was Betty Stövein doubles and Tom Okker on singles where he reached top 10 of the single players ranking • Netherlands is home to several tennis tournaments, including the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, one of the best visited indoor tournaments in the world
Field hockey • The Netherlands women's national field hockey team is the most successful team in World Cup history, having won the title six times • The Dutch male hockey team has won the world cup three times and Olympic gold on two occasions • Hoofdklasse hockey is the country's primary hockey competition since 1970, which is contested by 12 clubs • One of the most famous field hockey players on females in the Netherlands is daugther of portuguese parents
Swimming • The Royal Dutch Swimming Association has 148,599 members • Famous competitors include Rie Mastenbroek, who won a gold medal at the 1936 Summer Olympics • Recent champions include triple Olympic gold medalist Pieter van den Hoogenband • The current world record holder of the 50 metres freestyle is Marleen Veldhuis
Our opinion • Football is indeed the most popular sport in The Netherlands • Dutch people are big fans of cycling events. Even without knowing, dutch people do exercise just by riding their bike everyday • Lots of people pratice sport and are barely fit • In comparison to portuguese people, the dutch are more sportive
