  1. What is Health? • Health is a combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being. • The Health Triangle:

  2. Physical Health- the condition of your body • Mental & Emotional Health- the typical state of your thoughts and feelings • Social Health- the ways in which you relate to other people

  3. Wellness • Wellness is a state of well-being, or balanced health • A strong and balanced triangle over time NO YES NO

  4. Health Influences • Your health is affected by both factors that you can control and factors that are beyond your control • Uncontrollable factors: • Heredity- traits passed on from parents to children • Environment • Controllable factors: • Behaviors

  5. Risk Behaviors • Risk behaviors are actions or choices that may cause injury or harm to you or others • Consequences- the results of actions • Academic • Financial • Legal • Physical • Mental/Emotional • Social Examples?

  6. Reducing and Avoiding Risks • Prevention- taking steps to make sure that something does not happen • Abstinence- refusing to participate in unsafe behaviors or activities

  7. Health Skills • Accessing Information • find, evaluate, choose • Self-Management • practice healthful behaviors • manage stress • stress- your body’s response to changes around you • Analyzing Influences • recognize controllable and uncontrollable factors which affect your health

  9. Decision Making • The process of making a choice or solving a problem • Based on values • values- beliefs that guide the way a person lives • what is right and wrong • what is most important

  13. Refusal Skill Scenarios • You are at a sleepover with a group of friends. One of your friends offers to pierce everyone’s ears. You don’t like the idea, but others seem to want to do it. • You are at a Halloween party. One of your friends brings toilet paper to TP his neighbor’s house and yard. You don’t want to participate.

  14. Personal Health Goals • Long-term goal- a goal that you plan to reach over an extended length of time • Short-term goal- a goal that you can reach in a short length of time

Reaching Your Goal • Set a specific goal and write it down (long term goal) • List the steps you will take to reach your goal (short term goals) • Get help from others who can help and support you • Set a specific time period for reaching the goal • Evaluate your progress by setting checkpoints • Reward yourself after you have reached your goal
