  1. I need help with the Tsunami Problems. Mr. B. Oceanography Presentation by T. Brown 2013 based on PBS NOVA Activity

  2. Step 1- How do I Identify all the parts of the problem? • Depth of Undersea Earthquake = 3,200 meters (m) • Distance to Closest Island = 1,000 miles. • Speed of Tsunami = ? • Time until it reaches the closest Island = ? Other Information Given… • The Formula for speed of the Tsunami = • Gravity = 9.81 m/s2 you can ignore the 2 for this. • There are 3,600 seconds in an hour. • There are 1,000 meters in a kilometer. • There are about 1.61 Km in a Mile, (or 5Km = 3.1 miles) Presentation by T. Brown 2013 based on PBS NOVA Activity

  3. Step 2- How Do I Solve for the Speed of the tsunami? • Depth of Undersea Earthquake = 3,200 meters (m) • Distance to Closest Island = 1,000 miles. • Speed of Tsunami = ? • Time until it reaches the closest Island = ? • Gravity = 9.81 m/s2 you can ignore the 2 for this. Presentation by T. Brown 2013 based on PBS NOVA Activity

  4. Step 3- How Do I Convert Speed from m/s to km/hr? • There are 3,600 seconds in an hour. • There are 1,000 meters in a kilometer. 637848 m/hr/ 1000 m/Km = 637.85 Km/hr Presentation by T. Brown 2013 based on PBS NOVA Activity

  5. Step 4- How do I convert speed from Km/hr to MPH? 637.85 Km/hr / 1.61 Km/Mile = 396.18 MPH • There are about 1.61 Km in a Mile, (or 5Km = 3.1 miles) OR 637.85 Km/hr / 5 * 3.1 = 395.47 MPH Both round to  396 MPH Presentation by T. Brown 2013 based on PBS NOVA Activity

  6. Step 4- How do I figure out how long the tsunami will take to reach the Island? 1000 miles / 396 MPH = 2.52 Hours Presentation by T. Brown 2013 based on PBS NOVA Activity
