Focus group research 1. Recruit two groups of 6-10 young people: • Group 1: Eluxolweni shelter • Girl group • Boy group • Group 2: High school youth (Grade 11) • Private schools; • Township schools. • Group 3: High school youth (Grade 11) • Former Model C schools; • Mary Waters;
Group 4: Post-school: • Employed (formal sector); • Employed (informal sector) • Group 5: Post-school • Students (“college”); • Students (university). • Group 6: Post school • Short-term unemployed; • Long-term unemployed.
Group 7: Organised youth: • Lovelife volunteers; • Health NGOs • Group 8: Organised youth: • Church groups; • Sports club members. • Group 9: Organised youth: • Youth development organisations; • Junior councillors, political organisations.
2. Prepare the study mechanics: • Reserve venues; • Book and sign out recording equipment; • Buy refreshments for participants (you will be allocated a R300 budget for both focus groups by the Department of Journalism, honest!); • Do background research into youth issues; • Prepare a focus group interview guide (note that the presence of the guide doesn’t mean that the moderator cannot ask questions not contained in guide – note also that responses should be probed.)
3. Conduct focus group sessions in three segments (total of 90 minutes): • Task oriented: give respondents 30 minutes to agree on the top 5 problems and challenges currently facing them; • Moderator asks respondents to briefly explain the choices and collectively decide on one topic to pursue in the next segment of the focus group (5 minutes); • Moderator follows pre-established interview guides for 30 minutes on two topics assigned to your group by Rod (this is to ensure some parity between different focus groups) and spends a further 15 minutes engaging in open-ended discussion on the topic chosen from the first segment of the focus group.
4. Transcribe the session, analyse data. 5. Present findings for a short group presentation in Week 7 of Term 3 (no longer than 15 minutes including at least five minutes for audience feedback and participation) and cover: • Research findings (including main topic areas and various possible story angles associated with them); • Suggest way forward for covering topics in Term 4 – debate the various “journalistic approaches” that could be adopted by the group; • The group’s decisions, debates and recommendations should be presented within the context of an understanding of the theoretical debates and ethical issues surrounding the practice of the various forms of journalism.
