Today’s Topic: Decision Making What is a Decision? Hmmm… I don’t know!
Decision Defined: • A conclusion or resolution reached after consideration. • The action or process of deciding something or of resolving a question.
Easy vs. Hard Decisions • Get a partner! • Discuss what you both think an easy vs. a hard decision is and write down two examples of each! **Partners can have different answers!**
Easy Decisions: • Don’t have to think about it • Doesn’t take much time to decide • Know the outcome • Have made the decision before Example: Putting on shoes in the morning
Hard Decisions: • Critical thinking skills • Outweigh the options • More time to decide • Do not always know the outcome • Have not necessarily made the decision before Example: Deciding whether or not to take a drink at a party
Reflecting on Decisions… • What is the hardest decision you’ve had to make lately? • What will be a tough decision in your future? • What is the biggest factor that influences your decisions? • Why would someone who is quite smart make wrong decisions?
Making decisions involves a lot of influences such as: • People – Friends/peers, parents, teachers, role models, siblings…yourself! • ETHICS*** • Society/Media • Risks • Needs • Attitude • Self-esteem • Culture/Religion/Beliefs
What do you think all decisions require?? _________________ ANSWER: THINKING
What does soul searching mean to you? • Knowing yourself • What you want • Who you are • What you are capable of
There are 3 ways that people can react to a situation…. Being… • Assertive • Aggressive • Passive
1) Assertive *Role Playing* - “WHAT you WANT And HOW you FEEL” - Standing up for your rights
2) Aggressive *Role Playing* • You hurt others • Let your anger show
3) Passive *Role Playing* • Sacrifice own needs and feelings to please others
What Would You Do? • Think about what response you would typically use? • Does it depend on the situation? • What helps you to make your decision?
The Winning Formula in Decision Making E + R = W • E is the event • R is the response • W is what you get
The IDEAL Model • The IDEAL model is a problem solving system that can be used in ANY situation • What does IDEAL stand for?
IDEAL … • I – Identify the problem • D– Describe the possibilities • E – Evaluate the pros and cons to those possibilities • A– Act (Pick one of the possibilities and apply it to the problem) • L– Learn (What did you learn from the situation?)
IDEAL Model Application • Pick 1 out of the 3 scenarios • Apply it to the IDEAL model • Complete in class or complete it for Homework for next class
Pick One Scenario to use IDEAL • Your friend is pressuring you into doing drugs at a party. • You are fighting with your mom because she does not think your report card marks are good enough. • Your boyfriend, who has been emotionally abusing you, breaks up with you.
Reflection… “We can’t retract the decisions we’ve made, we can only affect the decisions we’re going to make from here.”
Video: • Listen to teens talk about the ethical decisions they are faced with every day. Examine the pressures they experience to drink, smoke, cheat, and have sex, and understand the principles they call upon to do the right thing. • http://www.learn360.com/ShowVideo.aspx?SearchText=decision+making&lid=13840639&GradeLevel=3360056&Subject=9331276&TagID=3333998&ID=130032
