  2. Steps to developing a survey • Decide the purpose of the survey • Knowwho you would like to survey • Choose the right type of question • Keep it short and to the point

  3. Types of questions • Structured • Multiple choice • Rating • Ranking

  4. Types of questions • Non - Structured • Open questions • Partially – Structured • – Similar to multiple choice but with an “other” option

  5. Purpose of our survey • To find out what our local community thinks about social media and the role it can play in our society • To establish an understanding of community expectations of athletes (and students) when using social media

  6. Who we would like to survey • Students • Teachers • Parents • Local business people • Members of our community

  7. Writing oursurvey • Move into break out rooms in groups of three schools • Each group is to come up with SIX questions • Share and combine our questions into a common survey we will all use

  8. Principles Purpose: to gain an understanding of what people think of as the essential characteristics of positive use of social media

  9. Practices Purpose: to gain an understanding of what people think of as responsible behaviour when using social media

  10. Values Purpose: to gain an understanding of the values people think should be modelled by someone using social media responsibly

  11. Community Purpose: to gain an understanding of what people in your community identify as issues associated with social media

  12. Conducting oursurvey • Agree on protocols with your teachers • who, what, when, where • Ensure you explain who you are and the purpose of your survey • Be polite

  14. Timeline from here • 25th August – meet online to analyse data • 30th August – head back to MCG to write code of conduct
