French Regime..in a nutshell • 1.Population: • A) Mainly French • B) High natural growth….in fact one of the highest in the world. • C) Jean Talon and his attempts to diversify and make it self sufficient. • D)Per Kalm-1749..It was a Good year..the little colony in the St. Lawrence and Les Canadiens follow the customs of the FN people and have an “Independent spirit”

  3. 2. Economy • A) Everything about New France revolves around the fur trade. • B) High population= increased demand for agriculture • C) Slowly involving other goods • D) It is still ultimately a trading colony despite attempts to diversify or turn it to a settlement colony.

  4. Power and Culture • A) Absolutism • B) People have no say • C) King has taken control through Royal Government and his appointed Gov/Int. • D) Church and State working together

  5. How the French Regime Ends: • 1. The Seven Years War: 1756-1763 • A) War between Britain and France in Europe AND in the colonies. • B) France loses the war and the epic battle on the Plains of Abraham….

  6. 2.Reasons for Britain’s success • A) Great navy • B) New France is surrounded by 2 British colonies 13 colonies down south and Hudson’s bay to the North. • C)Americans will start this war in the Ohio valley and then help end it… • D) 100,000 soldiers

  7. 3.Reasons for France’s failure • A) They focused more on the war in Europe • B) With the fall of Louisbourg in 1749 they NF is cut off from France (food shortages and lack of supplies in New France) • C) 20,000 soldiers • D) New France: small population and big territory to defend

  8. Important Dates • The Fall of Quebec City: 1759 • The Capitulation (giving up without fighting) of Montreal: 1760 • The 3 year Military Rule period until the Treaty of Paris is signed. • The Treaty of Paris is signed (story of the King)
