The three points I want to get across to you are: • The best predictor for trust in judges is not related to the Supreme • Court or the Charter, but is actually the respondents’ trust in • politicians. • In a correlation between trust in judges and trust in politicians, a • substantially higher r-squared value exists in comparison to • correlations between trust in judges and approval of Supreme Court; • approval of Charter. Also, when a multiple regression is performed on • the variables, trust in politicians is again found to have the higher Beta • value. • When an elaboration exercise is performed on the relationship • between trust in judges and trust in politicians, controlling for • following politics, a case of specification is found in the group • that do not follow politics closely.
Main question“How often do you trust judges to do the right thing?”- Measures trust in judges.
Other questions“How often do you trust politicians to do the right thing?- Measures trust in politicians.“Do you think the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (CCRF) is moving in the right direction, or not?”- Measures approval of Charter.“From what you have heard or read, how satisfied are you with the way the Supreme Court is working?”- Measures approval of the Supreme Court.“How closely do you follow politics?”- Measures knowledge of politics (political structures, current issues, etc).
HypothesisThe best predictors for trust in judges will be approval of the Charter, because it is the governing body of law for the judges, and/or approval of the Supreme Court, which is the institution associated with judges.
Comparison of the Measures of Associationa. Trust in Judges To Do the Right Thing by Approval of the Supreme Court Kendall’s Tau-b = .28125b. Trust in Judges To Do the Right Thing by Trust in Politicians To Do the Right ThingKendall’s Tau-b = .39415
CorrelationsTrust in Judges by Trust in PoliticiansPearson’s r = .4489r-squared = .2023This tells us that trust in politicians explains about 20% of the variation in trust in judges.Trust in Judges by Approval of the Supreme CourtPearson’s r = 0.0289r-squared = 0.000835Approval of the Supreme Court explains about 0.08% of the variation in trust in judges.
Elaboration • Original Crosstabulation • Trust in Judges by Trust in Politicians • Kendall’s Tau-b = .39415 • Include the control variable “how closely do you follow politics” • Very closely: Tau-c = .17550 • Somewhat closely: Tau-c = .32817 • Not closely: Tau-c = .40885 case of specification.
Original CrosstabulationApproval of Supreme Court by Approval of CharterKendall’s Tau-b = .20434 Include control variable “how closely do you follow politics”Very closely = Tau-b = .19166Somewhat closely= Tau-b = .16054Not closely= Tau-b = .10061A spurious relationship?
