MISPLACED VALUES Matt. 23:23-24
True Values • Pharisees observed correct rituals, but missed the great principles underlying them. • Matt. 6:33 – first things first. • Matt. 8:21-22 – what’s really important. • Luke 10:40-42 – How do we choose? • Are we guilty?
Money Before Souls • Mark 8:36f • Matt. 5:6 • John 6:27 • Providing for our families is important. • How much effort and time do we devote to caring for the soul?
Friendship Before Truth • “Know you not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God?” (James 4:4). • Friends are important. Many Bible verses talk about being and having friends. • Would you “skip” church to entertain? • Would you compromise a principle to avoid offending a friend? • Would you violate Jesus trust for a friend?
Pleasure Before Duty • Luke 8:14 • 2 Timothy 3:4 – “Lovers of pleasure” • Heb. 11:24f • Duty requires dedication and effort. Pleasure “just happens”. It’s effortless, easy • Duty is imposed on us by self. Sometimes we fight “it” w/o realizing we’re fighting self.
Physical Welfare Before Spiritual • I Tim. 5:8 vs. Eph. 6:4 • Family as an example – Sports, education, arts, social events. Each has its place. Soul is neglected. • Not just family. We come to view the world as first priority. • That view must change.
Total Dedication • God gives all to us. • Mark 10:28-31 • But demands all from us. • It’s an easy decision.
