GAMETOGENESIS SPERMATOGENESIS OOGENESIS OVARIAN CYCLE
LEARNING OBJECTIVES • Process of spermatogenesis • Structure of mature sperm • Process of oogenesis • Process of folliculogenesis • Female sexual cycles – ovarian cycle and uterine cycle
Male Reproductive Organs • Testicles/ testis – seminiferous tubules • Epididymis • Ductus deferens • Seminal vesicles • Ejaculatory ducts • Prostate • Male urethra - Penis
The reproductive system of the male Two major functions: • Production of sperm • To provide safe passage for spermatozoa
SPERMATOGENESIS • Is the sequence of events by which spermatogonia are transformed into spermatozoa. • It begins at puberty. • Occurs in seminiferous tubules of testis.
PHASES OF SPERMATOGENESIS • Spermatogonial Phase (Mitosis) • Spermatocyte Phase/Spermatocytosis (Meiosis) • Spermatid Phase (Spermiogenesis)
PHASE II-SPERMATOCYTOSIS Spermatids
SPERMIOGENESISThe series of changes resulting in the transformation of Spermatids into spermatozoa • Formation of acrosome • Condensation of nucleus • Formation of neck, middle piece & tail • Shedding of most of the cytoplasm
FEMALE GENITAL ORGANS • OVARIES • FALLOPIAN TUBES/ SALPHINX • UTERUS • VAGINA • EXTERNAL GENITALS - VULVA & CLITORIS • MAMMARY GLANDS
Functions • Oogenesis • Transport of ovum • Transport of sperms • Transport of zygote • Growth and development of embryo • Lactation
FEMALE SEXUAL CYCLES • OVARIAN CYCLE • UTERINE CYCLE • Birth – Puberty • Menarche – Menopause • Post menopause
Endometrium of Uterus Proliferative phase: glands and blood vessels scattered throughout the functional zone with little or no branching. New glands form and endometrium thickens. Secretory phase: glands are enlarged and have branches. Preparing the endometrium for implantation If no implantation then endometrium breaks down and menstruation begins.
