Gametogenesis Oogenesis and Spermatogenesis
Spermatogenesis The process occurs in the male reproductive organ the testes particularly in the seminiferous tubule. A diploid spermatogonial stem cell divide by mitosis to form spermatogonium that divides mitoticaly to form a primary spermatocyte. The diploid primary spermatocyte divides by meiosis to form 2 haploid secondary spermatocytes. This is known as the first meiotic division . The secondary spermstocytes further undergo meiosis to form 2 early spematids. This is known as the second meiotic division. The spematids then differentiate and undergo shape change to form sperm cells.
Continued...... The process occurs in the female reproductive organ which are the ovaries. The primary oocyte within the follicle in an ovary matures. It then divides by meiosis to form 1 haploid polar body and one secondary oocyte. This is known as the first meiotic division. In the second meiotic division the secondary oocyte divides to form one mature ovum and 1polar body. The polar body from the first meiotic division divide to form 2 polar bodies. At the end of Oogenesis 3 polar bodies and 1 ovum is formed.
