  3. Who are you? • Educators: • K – 12 • Technical/Community College • University • Government: • Energy providers: • How many in the room have a two-year technical/community college degree?

  4. Why are you here? • “America is a nation of innovators. We are also a nation of enormous natural resources. Congress should … craft… a … policy … to effectively marry those two assets, …” Frank Stewart

  5. Zane State College • Small two-year technical college • Approximately 2500 students • 1/20 size of The Ohio State Univ. • Located in Zanesville, Ohio • About one hour to the east • Population about 30,000 • Ohio State has over 50,000 students

  6. You may be thinking… Why was Jim Davis invited? Who is this guy? I have never heard of Zane State College.

  13. The challenge? Enrollments in engineering technology in Ohio: Down for the past decade Enrollment in the EET program at Zane State: Up each year for the past decade

  14. How did it happen? Produce a product that employers, such as AEP, want Actively involve employers on advisory committee Network, network, network… Provide graduates with skills employers want Develop a curriculum of courses aligned with employer needs

  15. Then what? Promote, promote, promote Visit high schools Talk to teachers and counselors Talk to parents and students Open door policy Success breeds success Place quality graduates in well-paying jobs With your company

  16. What does this mean for you? Promote, promote, promote Visit high schools Talk to teachers and counselors Talk to parents and students Volunteer Become a science fair judge Better yet, mentor a student Bring real-world principles to the classroom Volunteer at job fairs Come to our job fair Zane State has one every spring

  17. What else? Work with organizations with a similar mission National Society of Black Engineers Society of Women Engineers Hard Hatted Women If all else fails,… I will send you graduates

  19. So, what’s your story? Tell it. Who knows? Maybe the listener will become the next scientist or engineer that can transform dirt into energy.
