  1. WED 505 February 2, 2006

  2. Re-cap • Theory of Independent Study • Theory of Transactional Distance • Theory of Industrialization of Teaching • Theory of Interaction and Communication • Theory of Guided Didactic Conversation

  3. What is a theory? • A system for explaining a set of phenomena by specifying rules that relate the phenomena to each other.

  4. Equivalency Theory of Distance Education • "The more equivalent the learning situation of the distant learner is to the learning situation of the traditional learner, the more equivalent are the learning outcomes."

  5. "Finally, the most fundamental and most important characteristic of a profession is that the skills involved are founded upon a body of intellectual theory and research. Furthermore, this systematic theory is constantly being expanded by research."

  6. Chapter 3: Distance Education Research

  7. Purpose of Research about Distance Education • One purpose of research in distance education is to determine effective practices.

  8. Distance Education Research

  9. Distance Education Research Characteristics • anecdotal • comparison studies • lack of generalizability • adult learners • practitioner oriented

  10. Research Conclusions • Students value distance education but prefer traditional education. • Distant learners learn as well as traditional learners • Teaching effectiveness improves if it: • is carefully planned • uses structured note taking • uses visuals • is taught by trained teachers

  11. What Works – Distance Education • Carefully planned instruction • Structured note taking - interactive study guides • Visualizations of concepts • Less than 4 remote sites • Almost anything that works in a regular classroom - if it is planned

  12. What Doesn't Work –Distance Education • Poorly planned instruction • Unstructured note-taking • Talking head lectures • More than 4 remote sites • Almost everything, if it isn't planned carefully

  13. Chapter 4: Distance Education Technologies

  14. Technologies for Online Instruction • The purpose of the technologies is to promote communication. • The key to successful online instruction doesn’t lie in the technologies used but how they are used and what information is being communicated using the technologies.

  15. Selecting Appropriate Technologies • Assess available _______________ • Determine the LCT • Determine the ______________ • Identify learning experiences and match each to _________________ • Prepare the learning experiences for online delivery

  16. Lesson Structure Section 1 Section 2 Section 3 Module 1 Module 2 Learning Cycle Learning Cycle Learning Cycle Learning Cycle Learning activity Learning activity Learning activity Learning activity

  17. Terminology • Section: Largest unit of instruction • Module: Consists of an assignment and several learning cycles • Module Assignment • Evaluate students' comprehension of the content addressed in a single module

  18. Terminology • Learning Cycle • Course content’s smallest unit • Addresses a specific aspect of the module's learning objectives • Learning Activity • Measures the students' understanding of the learning cycle content • Designed to reinforce and apply content
