  2. What Symbols do you see? • What might these symbols represent? • Why do you think an Eagle was on the seal? • The words “E Pluribus Unum” translate to “Out of Many, One” what does this motto refer to?

  3. With the Seal in mind and the idea of a Republic.. • Why was a Constitutional Convention needed? • Although the 13 states would have a certain amount of independent control, it was believed states were stronger together. • The 13 states joined together to operate as a republic.

  4. The Articles of Confederation • What is a confederacy? • What are the articles? • Continental Congress creates the AOC in 1777 • How is power divided among the states in the articles?

  5. Articles Contd. • Power divided between national government and state government. • Majority of power given to states. • Created one body, the congress, to serve as the national government.

  9. Shay’s Rebellion • How did Shay’s Rebellion force people to re-examine the weakness of national government? -Who was Daniel Shays? -What did he do? Why? -What were the consequences?

  10. A call for Congress… • Shay’s rebellion called for a meeting in Philadelphia in 1787 known as the Philadelphia Convention. • Who attended this Convention? • 55 Delegates from each state except Rhode Island attended. • These delegates were known as the Framers of the Constitution.
