A little bit about me… • 20 year teacher (7 yrs at 1A school, 12 yrs at 3A school & 1 yr HISD) • Taught all grades 4-12 & most all subjects except ELA • TAMU-Class of ‘89 • Served on almost every committee possible from local to district wide • Active in several extracurricular functions-soccer, bell guard, UIL, etc. • FBLA Adviser & Past Pres BOD
Reflection: A little bit about you… Take a few minutes to reflect on one or more of the following: • Who are you? • Where you have been? • Why are you a teacher? • Why are you here today? • What do you want out of your teaching career?
Courses I have taught… • 4th grade: Math, Sci, SS, Health • 5th grade: Math, Sci, SS, Health • 6th grade: Math, Sci • 7th grade: Math, Sci • 8th grade: Sci • 9th-12th grade: Alg 2, Econ, Acct, BIM 1 & 2, Career Prep 1 & 2, Principles of BMF, Bus Mgmt, AVID and this next year I will be a certified Ag Teacher…because they asked me to teach Ag Math.
One last thing I want you to know about me before we begin… Guess how many PRINCIPALS I have served under in my 20 years of teaching? 16
Building Workforce Partnerships Building workforce partnerships is • knowing who you are, • knowing where you have been & who you know, • knowing what you want, and • establishing true relationships that are strong enough to call partnerships for the sake of business.

Jobs for Student Workers Career Prep teachers…it is a MUST! Entire workshop dedicated to this, but you must realize that it is YOUR partnerships too that you are establishing, not just for the student and the school. If you are not a Career Prep teacher, please think about helping the Career Prep teacher with your contacts or establish a “Career Center” in your classroom with job postings.
My Career Prep … • I was a Career Prep student and am fortunate to work in hometown with many lifelong already established partnerships. • Keep records. • Make visits. • Patronize those businesses. • Work hard to keep the students “in good standing” with those businesses. • Career Prep Appreciation Breakfast
Fundraising Needs • All extracurricular & supplemental-CTSOs, UIL, sports, clubs, fieldtrips, special projects in classrooms, etc. • Scholarships • Classroom equipment/supplies • Academic incentives WORD of CAUTION: Be a GIVER…not just a TAKER! HOT TIP: Chamber of Commerce is a wonderful source for mailing list.
My Fundraising • FBLA-For all levels (Local, State, & National), I have partnered with businesses to create funds for workshop fees, to purchase speaker/door prize gifts, pay supply/material fees, provide cash incentives for winners, and pay for special events like meal expenses.
My Fundraising Cont. • Career Prep $500 Scholarship, which is funded yearly by a local business, on behalf of a deceased Career Prep student.
My Photos & Ideas • Magnetic Calendars/Koozies/Balls/etc. • T-shirts for special events • Booth fees
Athens High School Ideas • AARO-Athens Academic Renaissance Association President Tracy Maxfield, along with other members of the AARO parent organization, have been hard-at-work since last summer, changing the entrance to the Athens High School atrium with a new $10,000 trophy case. The exhibit honors both academic and athletic achievement at AHS. Some of the trophies date back to the late 1920s.
Athens High School Ideas Cont. • A $719,000 Murchison Foundation grant for AISD. Areas of spending include: • $425,000 for technology equipment • $150,000 for AHS Advanced Placement Incentives • $30,000 to establish for a college and career center at AHS • $10,000 in scholarship funds to be distributed by the AHS Athens Academic Renaissance Organization • $42,000 for outside experts to consult with district teachers • $12,000 for professional learning libraries at each campus • pay stipends of $500 to $1,000 each for staff members who complete at least 30 hours of additional job training
Teaching Career Topics • In the classroom – Guest Speakers WORD of CAUTION: Once again, be a GIVER…not just a TAKER! I treat them to lunch and provide speaker gifts. • For the whole school – Career Fairs • For the whole district – District Career Fairs

Create Positive Image for the School • Do you read the news online or in an old fashioned newspaper both local and across the nation? What about listening to the news on TV or the computer? • This is a constant job no matter how large or how small your school. Who is responsible? Who can change the image? • It is OUR job to create a positive image for the school, for our students, for ourselves!!! • How? • By Building POSITIVE Workforce Partnerships.
