Calculating the Formula for a Hydrate Ch. 11, Section 5
Hydrate • A compound that has a specific number of water molecules bound to its atoms EXAMPLES: MgSO4.7H2O Na2CO3. 10H2O
Steps to determining the formula for a hydrate • Write down ALL information, including the hydrated compound and the anhydrate • Subtract: mass of hydrate – mass of anhydrate = g H2O • Find the moles of the anhydrate AND the moles of the H2O • Divide by the smaller # from #3’s calculation • Write the formula, using a dot to attach the water • Write the name of the hydrate
