Government of Canada: A Partner in Advancing the Bioeconomy
Alexandre Noppen Bioeconomy Policy Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Government of Canada May 13, 2014
Canada’s Bio-Advantage Canada has one of the largest biomass resources in the world (ag, forest, marine) 47 million tonnes of sustainable biomass residues produced annually And has… Mature forestry fibre collection infrastructure and secure property rights A technology advantage in several areas (e.g., cellulose nanomaterials, agricultural breeding and agronomics) An abundance of skilled labour Emerging clusters that draw upon existing infrastructure
Canada's Emerging Bioeconomy Source: 2009 Statistics Canada Bioproducts Survey Nano crystalline cellulose …creating opportunities for agriculture producers to move beyond traditional products. New developments
The bioeconomy offers opportunities for: 1. Enhanced Competitiveness Many high value products, fast growth rates New crops, new revenue steams and more value extracted from biomass Opportunity to co-produce bioenergy, bioproducts and conventional products (biorefineries) No long-term subsidies required BioPathways Analysis 2011. “The world’s largest turbine manufacturer, Vestas, forecasted a 75 to 95 percent contraction in the US wind power market if the Production Tax Credit was allowed to lapse” Global bioplastic production capacity (European Bioplastics 2012) 5-FOLD INCREASE!
The bioeconomy offers opportunities for: 2. Jobs and rural economic development Growing sector New/sustained jobs will be located near biomass resources Opportunities for rural/ off-grid/ Aboriginal communities Diversification of demand and supply chains (value-added primary processing) New business models
The bioeconomy offers opportunities for: 3. Environmental Benefits Meet market demand for environmentally preferable options Decrease net GHGs and reduce costs through fuel switching ‘Green’ existing infrastructure and industries Conversion of wastes Greater biodiversity
Recognizing these opportunities, the Government of Canada has taken action… Goal: advance technology leadership and maximize Canada’s attractiveness as a location for bio-investment. Strengthening Canada’s position along global value chains Initiatives have driven considerable success along the innovation continuum… Market Access and Development Bioeconomy R&D Scale-up and Commercialization Pilot and Demonstration
