POSITIVE BIBLE STUDY PRINCIPLES • There are ways NOT to study the Bible • There are ways TO study the Bible • It is not just reading but it is thinking
The literal principle • Believers should interpret the Bible literally • Believes should not interpret the Bible allegorically • “A representation of an abstract or spiritual meaning through concrete or material forms; figurative treatment of one subject under the guise of another.” • Focuses on symbols and hidden meanings • EXAMPLE: Pilgrim’s Progress • EXAMPLE: Gates in Nehemiah 3
THE CONTEXTUAL PRINCIPLE • Believers should interpret the Bible in context. • Do not take a passage or verse out of its immediate or biblical context. • Remember the Negative Principles!
THE CONTEXTUAL PRINCIPLE • Context includes: • The verses immediately before and after a passage • The paragraph in which the verse occurs • The book in which the verse occurs • The dispensation in which the verse occurs • Law or Grace? • The message of the Bible as a whole • The historical and cultural context that the book was written in
The synthesis principle • Believers should know that the Bible all comes together. • One passage of the Bible does not contradict another. • If there seems to be a contradiction, then we are not interpreting within context or we do not have all the information necessary to make a proper interpretive conclusion.
The synthesis principle • SCRIPTURE INTERPRETS SCRIPTURE • Let the clear texts interpret the obscure texts • James 2:24
The figure of speech principle • Believers should understand that figures of speech convey LITERAL TRUTH. • They are an impacting, picturesque, and colorful way of teaching literal truth. • Metaphors, Similes, Sayings, etc. • EXAMPLE: Matthew 5:30 • EXAMPLE: Psalm 119:105 • EXAMPLE: James 3:1-12
The Descriptive / Prescriptive principle • Believers should understand that some of the Bible is descriptive. • Describing a factual narrative of the spread of sin and depravity of mankind. • Abraham and Hagar • David and Bathsheba • The disciples’ stupidity
The Descriptive / Prescriptive principle • Believers should understand that some of the Bible is prescriptive. • Prescribing commands and principles for our application. • 10 commandments • “Do not worry” Matthew 6:25
Practical principle • Believers should understand that once an interpretation is made, practical application should take root in our lives. • The Bible is here to change our lives from the inside out. • EXAMPLE: hagios = saint = set apart ones = live set apart lives • Ask yourself, “What now?”
Big picture principle • Keep in mind the Big Picture of the text that you are studying. • Don’t let the details distract from the Big Picture, but rather, let them illuminate it. • Always ask yourself, “What is the main point?”
Step 1 • Pray to the Lord • Pray for god to open up His Word • John 16:12-15; 1 Cor. 2:9-3:3 • Bible students must be utterly dependent on God to understand the Bible
Step 2 • Fellowship with the Lord • Talk to the Lord as you read through the passage • Ask Him to teach you! • 2 Tim. 3:16
Step 3 • Read the book/section! • As many times as possible! • Soak it in!
Step 4 • Make observations • Make initial observations in a notebook or journal • Like you are on your first date
Ask questions! • Asking questions is the key to understanding. • Ask with a good attitude. • Seeking to learn. • Ask good questions. • Who, what, where, when, how, why, so what • Repetition, main themes, commands, figures of speech
