Break-bulk Rail Summary • Costs • Rail costs are higher than necessary due to rail being facilitated by 3rd parties. • If growing regions consolidated rail efforts and managed a rail account directly with TFR they could reduce transport costs significantly. • Alternatively CGA rail account • Service • Rail to Durban only works well to FPT, 333 Logistics and MFT facilities. Other facilities are too far out. • Japan and Russia volume considered ‘rail niche’ cargo. Homogeneous and single receiving facility. • Grapefruit rail service 1: Letsitele, Hoedspruit and Malelane to 333 Logistics. • Valencia rail service 2: Letsitele and Polokwane Hub to FPT, 333Logistics and MFT. • Russia consolidation from Letsitele and Polokwane Hub to FPT. • All Russia fruit is consolidated from multiple packhouses and railed to FPT.
Northern Region Container Rail via Polokwane Overview • Operational Benefits: • Exporter can consolidate from multiple suppliers – not restricted to a single supplier. • Accessible to the greater northern Limpopo and Zimbabwe regions. • Better equipment and better efficiency can be achieved. • EU EN 24hr rule will hinder the current Letsitele train as shipping lines will not release empty containers without a booking reference. • Citrus can be accumulated and bookings done based on stock. • Container loading and break-bulk done from the same facility. • Where are we? • Addressed with TFR and plan meetings with Limpopo Dept. Of Roads and Transport. • Steering committee to oversee logistics tender process.
