  1. Development of a Mechanism forTyphoon- and Flood-risk Assessment andDisaster Management in the HotelIndustry – A Case Study of theHualien Area

  2. About the journal Name: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Publication frequency: 4 issues per year Impact factor: 0.76

  3. Similarity • Disaster risks: • Typhoon • flood

  4. Risk management • Found weaknesses of risk management: • Not insured • No regular disaster protection training • No emergency plan • Over decoration of the lower floor • Misusage of basement • Installation of important equipment on the lower floor • Hotel owners have very little consciousness of risk management, they need to be educated

  5. Express risk module • Built on two types of disaster risk assessment methods: • Mapoverlap method • Point method

  6. Precise risk module

  7. Risk management strategy • Two possible triggers for loss caused by typhoons: • Wind • Water

  8. (Carpenter, 2002) Typhoon- and flood-risk control strategies

  9. To diminish the possibility of damage Site selection: low-lying, river-side and hill-side areas should be avoided the amount of decoration should be reduced, and attached facilities on lower floors important equipment should be located on higher floors emergency planning and training practices can be established insurance can be purchased to decrease loss due to unexpected disasters

  10. It is necessary to integrate ideas from a variety of fields such as tourism, engineering, earth sciences and the insurance industry to provide rapid disaster risk assessment for the tourism industry

  11. These findings contribute by facilitating better disaster risk management, and also stimulate future research in related fields including tourism risk planning, hotel building strategies, disaster insurance, disaster bonds, and finally risk module development, such as an earthquake module, man-made disaster module

  12. Thank you!
